Youngsville team captures second in the nation

TEXARKANA, ARKANSAS -- Youngville’s first-ever trip to a Dixie Youth National Tournament ended just a single victory from the championship.
Youngsville reached the finals of the D-Y Machine-Pitch World Series before falling 5-3 against Sebring, Florida. Despite the loss, it was a great tournament for the All-Stars, who went 6-2 overall.

LOUISBURG — Protesters waved signs and hurled accusations, claiming an “outsider” was responsible for disrupting a school community.
On July 14, Superintendent Lisa Martin announced that she had reassigned five educators.
The one that appears to have touched the biggest nerve, though, was a decision to move Novella Brown as principal of Terrell Lane Middle School, putting her in charge of the Creative Education Center, instead.

Shining the (sun)light on solar energy

BUNN — In the spring of 2012, Franklin County and Bunn were at the dawn of the solar farm age — literally writing the book on the subject.
The developments were so new that Franklin County planners had to define solar farms in their Unified Development Ordinance, and create a process by which they could be approved.

Long-time Louisburg councilwoman resigns

LOUISBURG — The Louisburg Town Council got some good news in the form of long-awaited sidewalk projects, just missed a state grant, got lambasted for roadside trimming techniques and its use of a herbicide and then lost one of its veteran members in a surprise announcement.
As Monday night’s meeting wound down, Mary Green Johnson, who has been on the council about 14 years, announced that she is resigning, effective Aug. 25.

Mother Nature slowly counting off days of summer
Mother Nature slowly counting off days of summer

Maybe it’s because I grew up in the country and like to dig in the dirt, but I tend to keep track of time by what’s going on outdoors. Forget the desktop calendar and the one hanging on the wall, nature seems much more reliable and enjoyable.
This week my friend and sometimes Times’ columnist Tracy Perry whacked me upside the head with a column he wrote about what’s in season ... and when. It should be elsewhere in this edition.

State personnel law needs ‘wiggle room’

A conflict of a sort that probably could have been avoided caught up with the Franklin County Board of Education this week — and, while the specific event that triggered it was unexpected, the conflict was unavoidable.
As you know from reading Page 1 of this edition, several parents of middle school students and friends of Terrell Lane’s former principal showed up at a special called meeting of the Franklin County school board — but were not allowed to speak in the formal part of the meeting.

Case of infant’s death serves as an education
Case of infant’s death serves as an education

Here we are.
A Louisburg teenager has been charged with concealing and failing to report the death of her child.
That child was only moments old, apparently, when the umbilical cord was cut too short and bled to death.
For 23 days, many wondered what fate would befall the teen mother, whose motherhood was, tragically, short lived.
For weeks, we had been seeing stories about children who perished after their parents or guardians left them to die in hot cars.

Be cautious of scoundrels of all types

Live and let live, an approach to life that if applied without prejudice carries with it the harmony most seek.
This should not mean you must accept what your good common sense tells you is wrong or unreasonable.
If you ask a friend or neighbor how they feel about the concept of live and let live, I am confident you will hear they subscribe to it.

The late Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan once told a colleague: “You are entitled to your own opinion, but you are not entitled to your own facts.”
Two weeks ago, the Franklin County Democratic Party’s reputation was falsely attacked in an op-ed in this newspaper.
There were also several misleading and hypocritical statements made.

McCrory, voters should think about teacher issue

Dear editor:
I am writing to you because I am very concerned about the future education of our children. Not just Franklin County’s children, but the entire state of North Carolina. All because our esteemed governor feels our teachers aren’t worthy of a decent pay raise.

TEXARKANA, ARKANSAS -- Youngsville’s All-Stars proved to be quick learners in the intracacies of machine-pitch baseball.
