HEAVY STORMS AND INFLOW
OF STORMWATER INTO
THE TOWN OF FRANKLINTON
SEWER SYSTEM CAUSE
WASTEWATER BYPASS
Franklinton, May 7, 2013: Franklin County Public Utilities experienced a bypass of untreated wastewater from a pump station located on Chavis Street in Franklinton on Monday, May 6, 2013. The spill occurred after the area received some 3.5 inches of rain during the afternoon hours. The main cause of the bypass is attributable to the direct inflow of stormwater into the Town of Franklintons sewer collection system. It is estimated that approximately 40,000 gallons of untreated wastewater entered a tributary of Cedar Creek which is located in the Tar River Basin.
Franklin County staff was notified of the spill by electronic monitoring equipment and appropriate staff responded to the incident. Public Utilities staff worked through the evening cleaning the affected area and returned on Tuesday morning to finalize the project.
As required by North Carolina State Law, the spill was reported to the North Carolina Division of Water Quality via the North Carolina Division of Emergency Management and is currently under review.
