WINFRED W. PORTER
ROCKY MOUNT - The Rev. Winfred W. Porter, 78, died Thursday, Dec. 23, 2010. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today (Wednesday, Dec. 29) at Lakeside Baptist Church, 1501 Sunset Avenue,  Rocky Mount, with Dr. Jody Wright, the Rev. Elizabeth Edwards and the Rev. Joy  Heaton officiating. Entombment will follow at Rocky Mount Memorial Park.

He was born in Pickens County, S. C., to Hoyt R. and Viola K. Porter, who preceded him in death along with his son, Stanley Welton Porter. His many pastorates included White Level Baptist Church, Louisburg, and Cedar Rock Baptist Church, Castalia. In addition, Rev. Porter was a clinical social worker in North Carolina. He also worked with a special program for youth and in mental health.
During retirement, he served as interim pastor at various churches.

Surviving: wife, Nancy Priest Porter; sister, Katherine P. Hensley of Greenwood, S.C.; daughters, Christine (Tena) Shearin (Phil) of Louisburg, Miriam Brown (Stanley) of Dortches, and Sonya Allen of Kingsport, Tenn.; sons, Robert Allen (Lisa) of Kingsport, Tenn., Ronald Allen (Kathy) of Wake Forest; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to The Baptist Children’s Homes of North Carolina, P. O. Box 338, Thomasville, NC 27361 or to Lakeside Baptist Church, 1501 Sunset Ave., Rocky Mount, NC 27804, or favorite charity.
