JULIAN J. “JULES” PERNELL, JR.

COLUMBIA SC - Julian J.“Jules” Pernell Jr., age 61, a resident of 2417 Rigby Drive, died Tuesday October 4, 2011 at his home. He was the son of the late Julian J. Pernell, Sr. and the late Elsie Gray Hunt Pernell of Henderson, NC. He was a graduate of the University of South Carolina and had extensive experience in International Foodservice through his years of travel and study in the culinary arts. Julian was an Executive Chef/Instructor in the School of Hotel, Restaurant, and Tourism Management in the College of Hospitality, Retail, and Sport Management at the University of South Carolina. He was nationally known for work with Tuber Melanosporum, also known as the Perigord Truffle of France. He had more than 30 years of experience in the hospitality industry and was the recipient of the 2006 Harry E. Varney Distinguished Teacher of the Year Award and received many other awards during his career.     

Graveside services will be held Saturday, October 8, 2011 at 11:00 AM at New Hope Christian Church Cemetery, Louisburg, NC, by Dr. Marion D. Lark.

He is survived by two aunts, Josephine Driver of Louisburg, NC and Shirley Hinson and husband Kirby of Louisburg, NC; and a special cousin, Marbeth Holmes of Louisburg NC.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service. 

Memorial contributions may be made to the Julian and Elsie Gray Pernell Academic Endowment Scholarship at Vance-Granville Community College, PO Box 917, Henderson, NC, 27536.

Arrangements are by the J. M. White Funeral Home Henderson NC.
