JARRETT EARL DICKENS
CASTALIA - Jarrett Earl Dickens, age 84, passed away Monday, August 06, 2012 at the Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro, from ALS.  During the 8 months after his diagnosis, he was an inspiration to all, with his attitude and sense of humor.   A native of Castalia, NC, he was born September 15, 1927, the son of the late William A. Dickens and Lonie Walker Dickens.  He was also preceded in death by 10 brothers and sisters.

Jarrett served his country in the 45th Infantry Division of the United States Army during the Korean War.  After 45 years of service, he retired from CSX Railroad as a Railroad Carman and  Inspector.  He was a devoted Christian and longtime member of Lakeside Baptist Church.

He leaves behind his devoted wife of 58 years, Joyce Boone Dickens; son, David Michael Dickens and wife Jill Stenstrom Dickens of Mebane, NC; grandchildren, Allison Dickens of Greensboro, Shannon Laing of Durham and Christopher Laing of Raleigh; brother, Bunn A. Dickens of Virginia Beach, VA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family received friends from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm Friday, August 10, 2012 at Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home.  A service to remember Jarrett will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, August 11, 2012 in the Mausoleum Chapel of Rocky Mount Memorial Park with Dr. Jody Wright officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to ALS Society (Catfish Hunter Chapter), 120 Penmarc Drive, Suite 101, Raleigh NC 27603 or the Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 2402 Wayne Memorial Drive, Goldsboro NC 27534.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Dr. Donald Bales and his staff, the staff of  the Kitty Askins Hospice Center, and his special caregivers, Wanda Foreman, Stephanie Ferguson, Alysia Graham, and Cheryl Clark for the care and support shown to Jarrett during his illness.
