PILOT - Perry Waddell “Snake” Horton, 84, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, March 26, 2013. Perry was born on October 4, 1928 in Wake County to the late Ruth Perry Horton and Marvin W. Horton.

Waddell is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Evelyne Stallings Horton, and his daughter, Charlene Horton (Greg Spell) of Pilot.  He was preceded in death by his son, Herby Horton, and brother, Marvin Adolph Horton of Stafford, Virginia.

He was first and foremost a farmer on his family farm. In 1952-53 he served honorably as a Corporal in the US Army in the Korean Conflict. After returning from active duty, he was manager and later owner of Stallings Store in Pilot until health caused him to retire. He worked part-time at the Franklin County Sanitation Disposal in Pilot.

Waddell was Charter President of the Pilot Lions Club which was chartered on March 26, 1973. The first project of the Pilot Lions Club under his leadership was to organize a fire department in Pilot. He served as Treasurer of the Pilot Fire Department for 20 years and sold the land for the firehouse at a reasonable price. In 1983, he sold additional land to add to the existing lot of the Pilot Fire Department. Waddell was a member of Pilot Baptist Church and a member of the American Legion.

Funeral Service was at 2:00 pm, Thursday, March 28, 2013 at Pilot Baptist Church, 8103 NC Hwy 39 S., Zebulon, NC  27597 with military honors.

The Horton family received relatives and friends immediately following the service in the church sanctuary.

Waddell’s final resting place will be at the Stallings Family Cemetery at a later date.

Flowers are welcomed or contributions may be made to the Pilot Lions Club, 50 Pilot Bypass, Zebulon, NC  27597 to be used for Camp Dogwood, White Cane, and the Boys and Girls Home.

The family would like to express their appreciation for the love and support over the past three months from family and friends, his caregivers, Lorraine Trader and Blanna Shields, Dr. Elderman of the VA Hospital and Dr. Gary Hwang.
