It is sadly announced that Brother Stanley Smith of Franklinton, North Carolina, passed July 6, 2013 in New York Presbyterian Hospital in New York City, New York.

Stanley was born June 21, 1948 in East Meadow, New York to the late Edgar and Daisy Corley–Smith.  He was born into a large, Christian family, with 12 siblings. He embraced Allah at the age of twenty-one and remained a devout Muslim for the remainder of his life.

 He attended Lawrence High School in Lawrence, New York, where he was All-American in Track, receiving a full athletic scholarship to Kentucky State University, attending for two years until drafted in 1968 into the U S Army.  He served in the Vietnam War as a sharpshooter, receiving a Vietnam service medal, combat infantryman badge, Vietnam campaign medal, and two purple hearts. After returning form Vietnam, Stanley worked at the Five Towns Community Center in Lawrence, New York as a youth counselor and received an associate degree in Sociology from Bronx Community College, Bronx, New York.

He served as a corrections officer for the New York City Corrections Department for 20 years, retiring in 1998; thereafter, moving to North Carolina where he was a devoted husband and father to his wife and three young children.

He was preceded in death by his parents and seven siblings; Johnny, Stevie, Raymond, Betty, Ethel, Patricia, and Pamela Smith.

 He is survived by his beloved wife of twenty-six years, Michelle; his only son, Malcolm Isaiah Smith of the home; three daughters, Michelle Wynn (Joseph) of Monroe, New York, Candice Fatima Smith of New York City, New York, and Naomi Megan Smith of the home;  three grandsons, Nyah, Dante, and Dillon, of Monroe, New York;  a brother, Gregory Smith (Shinetta) of South River, New Jersey; and four sisters; Gloria Wilson and Vicoria Evans (Henry) of Cambria Heights, New York, Mildred Butler and Linda Smith of Inwood, New York;  a mother-in-law, Linda Glover; two brothers-in-law, Christopher Lewis (Sharon) and Chester Glover; two sisters-in-law, Victoria Klaver (Kelvin) and Dorothy Newsome (Larry) of North Carolina; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Stanley had a special quality; he loved people. He acquired and maintained hundreds of close and personal friendships throughout his life.  He will be deeply missed.

Memorial Service is scheduled for 3:00 P.M. Saturday at the Franklinton Elementary School Gymtorium.  Professional Services Entrusted to Cutchins Funeral Home, Inc. - Franklinton, NC. Online condolences may be made to jbfcjr1@gmail.com or faxed to 919 494-5104.
