FREDERICK C. DICKERSON
RALEIGH - Frederick Clegg Dickerson, 82, of Raleigh, passed away on Thursday, February 5, 2009 at Mayview Convalescent Center.

Fred was born in Bunn, North Carolina, the son of the late James Graham and Marilda Strickland Dickerson. He was preceded in death by two brothers, James Harold Dickerson and Roger Wright Dickerson.

Following graduation from Bunn High School, Fred enlisted in the Army where he traveled extensively throughout Europe and Asia. His distinguished military career spanned 20 years. After retirement from the Army, Fred worked for IBM in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina for 25 years. Fred enjoyed his retirement since 1991 spending time with family and friends, revisiting favorite cities in Europe, relearning German and Italian, traveling throughout the U. S., walking, gardening, reading and giving of himself through numerous volunteer activities.

The family will receive friends from 2:00-3:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 7, 2009 at Strickland Funeral Home in Louisburg. Funeral service will be at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel, with the Reverend Rhonda Maurer officiating. Burial at Lancaster Memorial Park in Louisburg will immediately follow the service.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Alma May Dickerson of Raleigh; children Dawn Chilton and husband Zack of Eden, Tony Dickerson and wife Paula of Fuquay-Varina, Rita Chambers and husband Dave of Cary and Chris Dickerson of Cary; grandchildren Alison Hall and husband Trent of Apex, Heidi Gainey and husband Channing of Angier, Heather Dickerson of Zebulon, Holly Dickerson of Fuquay-Varina and Barrett Chambers of Chapel Hill; great-grandchildren Eric, Jacob and Sarah Gainey of Angier and Erin Hall of Apex; brothers Ashley “Buddy” Dickerson and wife Frances of Kinston, Maurice Dickerson and wife Zuria of Spring Hope, Ivan Dickerson and wife Yvonne of Rocky Mount, and Philip Dickerson and wife Sonia of Greenville; and sister Merle Fergerson and husband Charlie of Durham.

Flowers accepted or memorials may be made to Hospice of Wake County, 1300 St. Mary’s Street, Raleigh, NC 27605.

The family would like to thank the staff at Mayview Convalescent Center for their compassionate and loving care.
