The Franklin Times, based in Louisburg, NC, serves Franklin County northeast of Raleigh. It is the only newspaper published in the county and its content is focused on local government, local schools, the communities and the people who call this rapidly growing area home. Louisburg is about 27 miles from downtown Raleigh and 18 miles from Henderson to the northwest. The county has easy access via U.S. Highways 1 (now four lane) and U.S. 401 and to the Raleigh-Durham Research Triangle areas, the Raleigh-Durham International Airport and other parts of the metropolitan area, making this market a prime location for residential and commercial development. The Franklin Times has a paid circulation of about 5,500 and is published on Thursdays. The 151-year-old Times is a modern newspaper with color photographs in a modular layout. The Franklin Times is "the source" of local news and sports for county residents. The newspaper is normally printed in at least two sections with its award-winning local sports coverage beginning on the front of the second section.

ABOUT OUR COMMUNITY Franklin County has become one of the fastest-growing markets in North Carolina. Centered around historic Louisburg, the market maintains a strong identity separate from the Raleigh metro area.

Higher education Home to Louisburg College, a private, two-year, residential, co-educational college associated with The United Methodist Church and the oldest junior college in the United States, Louisburg can offer amenities that aren't normally available to residents of many smaller North Carolina towns. In addition to Louisburg College, the county is also home to the Franklin County campus of Vance-Granville Community College, one of the highly successful community colleges that form an integral part of higher education in the state.

Medical care Although it is close to major medical facilities in Raleigh and Durham, Franklin County has a full array of medical services. In addition, the county boasts an array of other medical professionals working in private practice.

Public schools With just more than 8,000 students, the Franklin County School system has 16 schools - eight elementary, four middle and four high schools plus an early college high school. The system's goal is for all students to be performing at or above grade level by third grade, with heavy emphasis on reading programs and individualized planning for each student. Teachers are also involved in whole faculty study groups to better plan and answer to each students needs based on test sores and classroom performances. The superintendent is Dr. Rhonda Schuler; the Board of Education has seven elected nonpartisan members.

Airport The Franklin County Regional Airport sits on 300 acres just south of Louisburg and houses between 65 to 75 aircraft. A general aviation airport, it does not service commercial flights, features a 5,500-foot runway and is considered a reliever airport for nearby Raleigh-Durham International.
