HOWARD F. JONES III


WARRENTON - Howard Field Jones III, 73, died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2010 at his residence. The Rev. Worth Jennings and the Rev. E.T. Malone, Jr. will conduct funeral services at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Warrenton, with burial to follow in Fairview Cemetery, also in Warrenton.

Mr. Jones was a Warrenton native, born to the late Bignall Speed and Grace Wagner Jones. He is a graduate of John Graham High School and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Mr. Jones was long associated with The Warren Record, owned by the Jones family for nearly a century. He succeeded his father as editor in 1985 and served in that capacity until his retirement in 2000.

Howard was past president of the Cherry Hill Historical Foundation and Preservation Warrenton. He was a member of the Rotary Club, was past Senior Warden of Emmanuel Church Vestry, formerly served as a Warrenton Town Commissioner, and was a founder of the Warren County Community Foundation. He was a former member and officer of the Eastern N.C. Press Association. He served as a Congressional Aide to U.S. Congressman Nick Galiafinakis. Mr. Jones also started the Butner-Creedmoor News and the Brodie-Jones Printing Company. He worked for newspapers in Durham, Roxboro and Henderson.

Mr. Jones is survived by his two sisters, Ann Bignall Jones and Mary Brodie Raiford, both of Warrenton; his nephew, Patrick Raiford of Warrenton; and his niece, Elizabeth Raiford of Raleigh.
