CHARLES L. GILLIAM


VIRGINIA BEACH, VA-Charles Lamb Gilliam, 90, died Sunday, Nov. 27, 2011 at home. Funeral service will be held Saturday, Dec. 3, at 2 p.m. at Galilee Episcopal Church in Virginia Beach, Va.

A native of Franklinton, he was the son of Olivia Hyman Lamb and George Gilliam. He was a graduate of N.C. State University. During World War II, he served a tour as second lieutenant in the 384th Bomb Group based in Grafton Underwood, England.

Prior to moving to Virginia Beach, he was the superintendent of a textile mill in Warrenton. After moving to Virginia Beach, he was an insurance adjuster, as well as co-manager and owner of the Halifax Hotel on the Boardwalk for over 35 years.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, George Gilliam Jr. and Sterling Gary Gilliam.

Surviving: brother, Gideon Gilliam of Front Royal, Va.; children, Harriet Gilliam Vance of Roanoke, Va., Charles Lamb Gilliam Jr. (Rebecca) of Shutesbury, Mass., and Margaret Gilliam Philpott (George) of Durango, Colo.; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
