LOUISBURG - Elmo Burrows May of Louisburg died Thursday, December 10, 2013 at home surrounded by his loving family.

Elmo was born October 17, 1930 to the late Willie Elias and Eleanor Shearin May. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1951-1954 on the U.S. Coast Guard ship, Violet. He was stationed in Cape May, New Jersey and Groton, Connecticut. He received an honorable discharge in 1954. He also served on the N.C. Soil and Water Board from 1994-2010.

Elmo was a well-known and respected tobacco farmer in Franklin County. He also raised Black Angus Cattle.

He was a pillar of love, strength and wisdom for his family and many friends. He will be greatly missed by so many.

Elmo was a life-long member of Hill King United Methodist Church and served in many capacities throughout the years. He served as a Sunday School teacher, choir member and superintendent of Sunday School. He continued to show his love and support for the church by donating land for the fellowship hall that will be used for many years to come.

Elmo is survived by his loving wife of sixty-two years, Dovie Valentine May, and his sons, Steve (Ginny), Ricky (Gale), Stuart (Kelly), and daughter, Susan Parrish (Tony).

Also surviving are his grandchildren, Jodi Pope, Michael May (Mandy), Jeremy May (Leslie), Courtney Alford (Kevin), Ryan May and William Parrish. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Brandon Perry May.

He is also survived by nine great-grandchildren; his sister, Shirley Southall and husband Wilbur; sisters-in-law, Peggy May Purdue (Kenneth), Eula May and Janet May.

He is preceded in death by his brothers James, Vernon, and Douglas, and sisters Lucille, Doris and Alma.

The family also has a special love and appreciation for Ann Kennedy, a loving caregiver for the entire family.

The funeral arrangements are being made by Strickland Funeral Home and Crematory in Louisburg. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 12, 2013. The funeral will follow on Friday, December 13, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Strickland Funeral Home.

Flowers will be accepted or memorial gifts may be made to Hill King United Methodist Church (c/o Ricky May, 1897 NC 39 Hwy South, Louisburg, NC 27549).
