REV. DR. JOHN THOMAS "TOMMY" SMITH


ANGIER - The Rev. Dr.. John Thomas "Tommy" Smith, 82, died Thursday, April 30, 2015 in Raleigh. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 3, at Rose & Graham Funeral Home in Coats. Officiating will be the Revs. J. Edward Morrison and Tom Newman.

He was born in Orange County to the late Ralph L. and Grace Canada Smith In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Jones; and brothers, Steve Smith, Billy Smith and Ralph Smith Jr.

An ordained United Methodist minister, he served churches in the North Carolina Annual Conference for more than 50 years. He attended Southeastern Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and graduated from Louisburg College and Atlantic Christian College. He served on the Board of Directors of Louisburg College. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving during the Korean Conflict. He is also the author of two books.

Surviving: his wife, Judy Harrell Smith; sons, Thomas Smith (Melanie Mabrey) and Paul Smith (Kim Smith), all of Raleigh; and one granddaughter.

The family will receive friends at Rose & Graham Funeral Home in Coats from 2 to 2:45 p.m. Sunday prior to the service.
