NANCY BIRD BERGER

NANCY BIRD BERGER

GARNER - Nancy Bird Berger, 71, LHS 1962 graduate, died suddenly at Northpointe Assisted Living, Friday, September 11.

Nancy was the eldest daughter of Adeline Cowan Berger and James Lipscomb Berger, Sr., both long-time Louisburg residents, both now deceased for over a decade.

Nancy had not been physically ill; there were no signs of her being about to collapse. Extensive attempts were made by emergency services to revive her, but without success.

Carolyne Gupton Rogerson, of Georgetown, SC, as the LHS '62 class co-ordinator and one of Nancy's dearest life-long friends, has kindly assisted in alerting her former high school classmates of this sad event.

Nancy was a brilliant student at LHS, and, subsequently, at Louisburg Junior College, with an emphasis on drama and literature.

She transferred to UNC-Chapel Hill in 1965, and was one of the very few elite students accepted into UNC-Chapel Hill's Junior Year Abroad Program for France, where she spent the 1965-66 academic year.

Unfortunately, after that successful adventure, Nancy soon developed schizophrenia.

She battled that terrible illness, with valor, throughout the rest of her life.

An informal celebration of her life will be held, in the next week or so, at Northpointe Assisted Living in Garner, where Nancy had resided for about 10 years. The contact person, for those wishing to attend, is the social director there, Christy Austin, at 919-779-4560.

Surviving, from Nancy's immediate family, are her younger brother, Jim Berger, Jr., of Auckland, New Zealand, and his daughter, Sara Corinne, of Wellington, New Zealand. Also surviving are relatives on Nancy's mother's side, in Nicholasville, KY.

Nancy Bird Berger was unique, a real person and a wonderful sister, and she will be missed by her brother and the many others who were fortunate enough to know her.

May Nancy now be in a better place, without illness, and with all her talents and loveliness restored, forever.
