ROBERT C. HOLMES


FRANKLINTON - Robert Carlton Holmes, 81, died Saturday afternoon, May 31, 2008 at Croasdaile Village in Durham. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, June 3, at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Sidney Stafford officiating. Burial with military honors followed in the church cemetery.

He was born the son of the late Ina Evans and Bruce Cook Holmes at the family homeplace in Granville County, where he lived his entire life.

He was a gifted craftsman in woodworking and carpentry and a former employee of Evans Lumber Co. and Brown & Gupton Timber Co. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served in Germany during World War II. He served as treasurer of Wesley Chapel UMC for 50 years.

Surviving: his wife, Elna Mangum Holmes of Franklinton; sisters, Edith H. Pope (R.A.) and Helen Hicks Whitfield (Maurice), all of Creedmoor; many nieces and nphews.
