LOUISBURG - Charles Ray Smith, Sr., 60, died Monday, Sept. 29, 2008 at Wake Med. A memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 2, at Welcome Chapel Independent Baptist Church, 316 Pine Ridge Road, Zebulon, with the Rev. Bill Shumaker officiating.

Charles was born in Wake County to the late William Harvey Smith and Mary Yates Smith. He worked in shipping and receiving with Alcatel.

Surviving: his wife, Betty Strickland Smith; children: Charles Ray Smith, Jr., Jeremy Paul Smith, Craig Barham; stepdaughters, Tammy Aldridge and Debra King; sister, Clara Lowery (Bud); and seven grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Mildred Pilcher.
