GARNER - Joyce Harris Benson, 83, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2008. A memorial service was conducted Friday, Oct. 17, at Bryan-Lee Funeral chapel in Garner. Interment service will be at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Tex., at a later date.

She was born in Bunn, but spent 46 years in Texas before moving back to North Carolina to be near family. She taught several years before joining the Women’s Army Corps. She later moved to San Antonio, where she retired after 21 years as a reference librarian for the San Antonio Public Library.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Olivia Johnson Harris, and her father, Reginald V. Harris.

Surviving: sister, Pearl Harris Gomo (Kem) of Greensboro; brothers, James R. Harris (Martha) of Richmond, Va., Roy C. Harris (Betty) of Garner; one nephew and two grand-nieces.
