GEORGE L. SHEARIN SR.


CASTALIA - George Lilburn Shearin, Sr., 82, , died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2008 at Wake Medical Center. Services will be at 2 p.m. today (Saturday, Jan. 3) at Red Bud Baptist Church, with the Rev. Leo Lowery officiating.

He was born in Warren County, the son of the late Garnett Lee Shearin and Hannah Conner Shearin. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served in WWII on the U.S.S. North Carolina. He was a truck driver for 37 years and retired from Chemical Leamon Tank Lines. He owned and operated B&G Shearin’s Grocery & Grill in Castalia for 13 years.

Surviving: his wife, Barbara Jean Shearin; children George L. “Buck” Shearin (Ann) and Judy House (Ricky), both of Virginia, John Frank Steed (Melody) and Harlen Ray Steed (Lisa), both of Nashville, and Tonja S. Philbeck (Travis) of White Level; brothers, Rhodes “Pete” Shearin of Castalia, David Lee Shearin of South Carolina and Cecil Ray Shearin of Charlotte; 30 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his daughters, Brenda Kay Webb and Marion Yvonne Harris, and a sister, Nanny Elizabeth West.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Red Bud Baptist Church, 1284 NC Highway 58, Castalia, NC 27816 or to a charity of one’s choice.

Friends and relatives may visit with the family immediately following the service at the church.
