ZEBULON -- The Carolina Mudcats scored two runs in the eighth inning to escape the Wilmington Blue Rocks (2-4) 5-3 in front of 1,044 on Wednesday night at Five County Stadium in a Class A Carolina League baseball contest.
Jake Lowery punched through the winning run for the Mudcats (4-2) with a two-out single to right in the eighth.

LOUISBURG -- Louisburg College freshman Jasmine Phillips has earned a apot on the First Team of the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II Women’s Basketball All-American Squad.
Phillips, a freshman from Hartsville, S.C., helped the Lady Hurricanes to a 30-2 overall record and a third-place finish at the NJCAA D-2 National Tournament last month in Illinois.

After having to farm out the International Whistlers Convention two of the last four years, organizers are whistling a different tune as they plan to host the worldwide event for a second consecutive year.
The 39th edition of the International Whistlers Convention kicks off April 18 and runs through April 22.
Up until 2007, the event had been a more than three-decade mainstay in Louisburg as artists from around the world descended n this small town to compete against the best classical and popular whistlers around.

Franklin County deputies continue to look for suspects in an armed home invasion that led to a father being shot.
Drugs found in the home has also involved the county’s Multi-Agency Narcotics Unit (MANU).
According to investigators, Joshua Hargrove was at his Rough Lane home during the early morning hours of April 6 when two men kicked in his back door.

Franklin County sheriff’s deputies continue to investigate the death of a dirt bike rider who was clipped by a steel cable.
Preliminarily, though, investigators said the death of Matthew Elliott, 37, appears to be an unfortunate accident.
“It’s tragic,” said Franklin County Sheriff’s Capt. William Mitchell.

A superior court judge rejected a plea agreement on Monday, saying the charges were too serious and the defendant wasn’t serious enough.
In March 2011, investigators charged Gary Normand with attempted first-degree murder, first-degree arson and felony assault with a deadly weapon following a fiery altercation he had with his estranged girlfriend, Chloe Reynolds.

Chelsea Pegram, a sixth grade student at Gorman Christian Academy in Durham and the granddaughter of Larry and Jane Goswick of Louisburg, won a Blue Ribbon at the 2012 Science Fair held on April 4 at the Academy. Her science experiment was entitled “What Type of Toothpaste Removes Most Stains?” She used white ceramic tiles as an example for teeth, bringing them back to their original color.
