Elliott Thomas, a junior at Louisburg High School, was selected to participate in the Honor Band Festival held on Dec. 10, 2011 at the University of North Carolina in Wilmington. He was chosen as first chair in the Teal Band for bass clarinet.

Zoe Hinton recently attended the North Carolina Catalyst Conference which was held Feb. 24- 26 at UNC Chapel Hill. The annual Catalyst Conference brings a group of 80 high school students selected from a pool of 350 applicants from across North Carolina to UNC-CH for a weekend-long exploration of social issues affecting American youth.

Franklin County Community Foundation opens grants window for nonprofits
The Board of Directors of the Franklin County Community Foundation is accepting grant applications for community projects funded from its community fund, according to Bob Powell, grants committee chairman.
Funds are available for nonprofit organizations that serve Franklin County.  Priority will be given to programs that target the needs brought on by the ongoing economic downturn, organizers said.

County staff released a copy of McGhee’s resignation letter, citing business reasons for her immediate departure from public service.

Commissioners to address inconsistent property values
The Franklin County Board of Commissioners will host a special-called meeting this Monday, hoping that a revaluation company can explain values that property owners say area all over the place.
The county contracted Assessment Solutions Inc. to perform revaluation services and after waiting two years to let the housing market settle, company President Tim Cain told commissioners that countywide values went up an average of 14.8 percent.

FRANKLINTON — The old Franklinton High School will be the site of a public meeting that will help determine the future of a major county thoroughfare.
The Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) has been tasked with developing a comprehensive management plan for U.S. 1 — a significant north-south corridor that runs along the western end of Franklin County through Youngsville and Franklinton.

Agents with the State Bureau of Investigation are probing allegations that a former animal control officer embezzled funds.
Kathy Johnson was fired on December 28 and accusations that as much as $8,600 was missing from the office falls at her feet, said Finance Director Chuck Murray.
