ZEBULON -- The Carolina Mudcats and Cleveland Indians have jointly announced the signing of a two-year player development extension that keeps the Indians in Zebulon through the 2014 season.  
Additionally, the Mudcats will be hosting a major league exhibition game with the Indians on April 3 at Five County Stadium.

LOUISBURG -- It’s a testament to Coach Mark Vanderslice that his Louisburg College men’s basketball squad had never lost a Region X, Division II game during his two-year stint in charge of the program.
However, that fact changed Tuesday as the Hurricanes suffered a 92-75 setback on the road at Patrick Henry Community College in league action in Martinsville, Va.

LOUISBURG -- Louisburg High School’s rebuilding wrestling season will continue today when the Warriors travel to Apex to take part in the Mustang Stampede Tournament at Middle Creek High School.
Louisburg boasts a young squad this year under new coach Courtney Tart.
The Warriors don’t have many veterans, but one long-time standout is Braulio Rayo, who is excelling in the 106-pound weight class.

Franklin County commissioners have scheduled a special-called meeting to name its new county attorney.
The board met behind closed doors on Jan. 3 to interview three candidates for the position.
After meeting with each candidate for 30 minutes, the board came out of closed session to announce that no action would be taken.

There will be a host of venues beginning on Saturday giving residents a chance to celebrate the life and legacy of slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.
First, organizers in Franklinton will host a celebration that begins with a lineup at 10 a.m. at the old Franklinton High School gymnasium, giving way to a ceremonial march through town to First Baptist Church, where a service will take place.

FRANKLINTON — Town commissioners and staff will have wrapped up their annual retreat on Wednesday, having had two days to bandy about issues ranging from ethics to taking over a cemetery.
The board held a two-day retreat beginning on Tuesday at the Town Hall annex.
The first day’s agenda, after introductions were out of the way, was to discuss values, ethics and expectations of board members.

The Franklin County Board of Education got an in-depth look at economic issues they will face in 2012 during a committee meeting before the regular board meeting Monday night -- and it was a somber assessment.
The local school system gets about 63 percent of its funding from the state and an additional 12 percent from the federal government, meaning that it is closely tied to both the state and national economy, said Doug Moore, assistant superintendent for business and finance.

On a scale of 1 to 5, a recently released survey shows that area judges up for reelection are doing an above average to nearly excellent job.
The North Carolina Bar Association, a voluntary organization of lawyers, paralegals and law students, released its Judicial Performance Evaluation Survey this month, giving voters a tool they can use when choosing judges up for election this year.

Ransdell; a son, Samuel H. (Sammy)  Ransdell, Jr.; daughter and son-in-law, Joyce R. and Herbert Young; sisters, Addie R. Cash, Mattie R. Harrison, Virginia R. McConnell, Josephine R. Hart, Mable R. Medlin and Eleanor Ransdell; brothers, John Ransdell, Fred Ransdell and Charlie Pergerson. He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy.
