All-Stars compete at states
FRANKLIN COUNTY -- Things didn’t go as hoped for at least three of Franklin County’s participants at the Tar Heel State Softball Tournament in Morganton.
The Bunn All-Stars and Louisburg All-Stars were both defeated in first round action of the 8-Under Tournament, while Youngsville was topped in the 10-Under Tournament.

BUNN -- Not all was lost for the Bunn All-Stars following a semifinal loss at the Dixie Youth Coach-Pitch State Tournament on Tuesday at Tart Park in Dunn.
As a Top-Four overall finisher (Bunn took third), the All-Stars have earned a trip to the D-Y Regional Tournament -- a 16-team event slated to begin July 30 in Florence, S.C.

BUNN -- This age group has experienced plenty of successes over the years -- and the Bunn 14-Under Team recently added to its list of accolades at the Tar Heel District Softball Tournament.
Bunn, coached by Chris Brantley, swept a best-of-three series last week against host Knightdale to advance to the states, which began Thursday night in Morganton.

FRANKLIN COUNTY -- The Miracle League of Franklin County is currently accepting registration for its Fall 2011 Baseball Season.
The Miracle League is a baseball league for children with physical, cognitive and/or emotional disabilities.
Cost is $35 per player. The first practice will be Aug. 27 at 6 p.m. at the Louisburg High School Softball Field.

Hurricanes sign Sutter to deal
RALEIGH -- Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes has announced that the team has agreed to terms with center Brandon Sutter on a three-year contract.
The deal will pay Sutter $1.5 million in 2011-12, $2 million in 2012-13 and $2.7 million in 2013-14.

Franklinton police arrested two women, one on drug charges and another on having fictitious registration.
According to a report, Officer S. Zuniga and Sgt. W.B. Bulloch were providing surveillance at Communication Drive and Allen Avenue when they saw a car pull up, turn off its headlights and turn on the dome light inside the car.

If approved, it would leave residents in the two districts fighting for new representation between a whole new set of counties.

Schools headed for state honors
The Franklin County Board of Education was teased with some pending good news Monday night but also faced the reality of the effects of state budget cutbacks.
The good news, said Superintendent Eddie Ingram, is that the county school will likely have four “Schools of Distinction” this year, although the official results will not be released by the state board of education until August.

The Franklin County Board of Commissioners is preparing to meet jointly with Franklinton about purchasing its water system.
County commissioners want to meet in private, first, though.
County staff advised commissioners on Monday night that engineering consultants could have a final appraisal of the town’s water system available soon.

A civil engineering firm that oversaw a home rehabilitation project advised commissioners that they got more than their money’s worth.
The county received a $400,000 Community Development Block Grant in 2008 to improve six homes scattered throughout the county.

Bunn delays lifting sweepstakes ban
BUNN — Bunn commissioners agreed to wait to determine if it lifts a ban on sweepstakes cafes.
The town placed a moratorium on Internet cafes in June 2010 — a month before the General Assembly voted to ban the establishments.
That ban took effect on December 1.

New legislation requires blood sample
A N.C. Senate bill that will make it harder for impaired drivers to skirt the law in death by motor vehicle cases has been signed into law by Gov. Beverly Perdue. The legislation was sponsored by Sen. Doug Berger of Youngsville.
“I worked on this legislation for several years after a constituent who lost her parents in a head-on collision near her home brought to my attention that there were problems with the current law,” Berger said.

The case against a White Level woman accused of abusing residents and property in her neighborhood cleared one hurdle this week.
Superior Court Judge James Cole reviewed a psychological evaluation this week and ruled that Phyllis Courtney was competent to stand trial.
