Duo arrested for conning woman out of life savings
A Louisburg man and Rocky Mount woman accused of swindling a Creedmoor woman out of her life savings are slated to appear in Granville County court next month.
Law enforcement officers in Franklin County, Creedmoor and Rocky Mount combined with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division to charge Aaron Pittman, 55, of N.C. 39, and his wife, Mildred Diane Dew, 56, with several charges associated with the theft.

Franklin County and Central North Carolina dodged a wintry mix on Friday, but Saturday presents one more hurdle.
No town or governmental offices were impacted on Friday, but the threat of sleet and snow caused Franklin County school staff to delay opening by two hours as a storm began to sweep through the area Friday morning, bringing the wintry mix.

FRANKLINTON — Police arrested a man on charges of  disturbing the peace and assaulting an officer after he claimed to have downed at least four gallons of corn liquor.
According to a report by Sgt. K.J. Hornaday, he was responding to a call regarding a suspicious person near N.C. 56 and Chavis Street when a short distance away, he was flagged down by a man trying to help his friend, Ryan Jay Moore.

Murphy House BBQ recalled by USDA
The Murphy House has to recall nearly 3,000 pounds of barbecue according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) said the company is recalling 2,850 pounds of pork barbecue products because they may contain an undeclared allergen, soy flour.
Soy flour is a known potential allergen, which is not declared on the label.

Ted Horton’s widow drops Netstar suit
A case alleging that Franklin County and a dozen other entities were responsible for a helicopter crash that killed a former deputy was dropped late last month.
It’s not clear if the dismissal is for good, though.
“The remaining defendants appear, at this time, to have no assets,” said Hill Allen, attorney for Ann Greene, the wife of Ted Horton, who died in a May died in a May 14, 2004 helicopter crash.

Filing period begins Feb. 8
The filing period begins Monday, giving incumbents or newcomers a chance to run for county, state and federal offices.
The period opens at noon on Monday and runs through Feb. 26 at noon.
To file, candidates have to be 21, fill out paperwork at the Board of Elections office and pay a fee: which is $1,740 for a federal seat, $207 for a state seat, or 1 percent of either the salary of a position like clerk of court or 1 percent of the stipend paid to a commissioner or school board member.

BUNN — Town officials and staff moved another step closer to improving its wastewater system this week.
The town’s system has reached a capacity level that requires expansion.
On Tuesday night, the board chose the engineering firm of O’Brien and Gere Engineers Inc. out of Raleigh to oversee the project.

John and Ryan Anselmo of Louisburg are proud to announce the birth of their son, John Lucas Anselmo, born Dec. 3, 2009 at Rex Healthcare in Raleigh. He weighed 8 pounds and was 21 1/2 inches long.
Maternal grandparents are Van and Jamie Cash of Louisburg and Brenda Whitley, also of Louisburg.
Paternal grandparents are John T. Anselmo of Spring Hope and Rosemarie Calabria of Wilson.

Paige Williford and Ricky Johnson were married on Dec. 19 during a 2 p.m. ceremony at Sparta Advent Christian Church. The officiating minister was Jack Ellis.
The bride is the daughter of James and Teresa Williford of Elm City.
The groom’s parents are Ronnie and Betty Gupton of Louisburg.

Annual registration for Franklin County Schools’ kindergarten will be held at each of the eight elementary schools in Franklin County.
In order to assure a child has a smooth transition into school, parents are asked to register during one of the dates.

Waffle House money scattered, covered and smothered but not recovered
Louisburg police arrested a man accused of leading police on a short vehicle chase.
According to a report by Officer Elliott Coker, police began to follow Bradley Greear as he drove on Bickett Boulevard at about  10 p.m. on Wednesday.
Officers were familiar with Greear, whose license was revoked.

So much for a balanced approach in your main editorial of the January 30 edition.  You made reference to the Congressional Republicans as the party of “no” and the party without any solutions or programs of their own.  First, I for one, am comfortable with “no” when it must be used to preserve basic American principles.
