County approves Palziv funding
Commissioners agreed to extend a $250,000 incentive to a business interested in coming to Franklin County.
The board made the decision following a public hearing that drew no comment.
The state announced earlier this month that it would provide a $250,000 grant through its One North Carolina Fund to bring Palziv’s North America headquarters to the HON building on N.C. 56.
As a condition of the state program, the county is required to make a local match.

Mann murder case informants plead guilty
Two suspects that prosecutors said were key in concluding a murder case both pled guilty in superior court on Monday for their role in the death of a Bunn-area man.
Quandrea Wilson and Darius Horton were both sentenced to between 20 and 33 months in jail on charges of conspiracy to commit armed robbery.
Both men, prosecutors said, provided the necessary information that led investigators to Ibin Williams, the Nash County man who pled guilty to shooting and killing Corey Mann during the early morning hours of July 3, 2008 after a botched robbery attempt.

Louisburg approves Murphy Oil gas station
The Louisburg Town Council cleared the way for Murphy Oil Co. to construct a service station at the entrance to the new Louisburg Plaza shopping center during its regular Monday night meeting.
Murphy Oil plans to construct the multi-pump station to the left of the shopping center’s entrance off NC 56 West.
All that remains to be done is for the town to formally annex the property, action that is expected to come after a Dec. 21 public hearing that will be part of the council’s regular December meeting.

DWI case unsettling
A Rocky Mount man is slated to appear in Franklin County court next month on a felony and two misdemeanor charges related to a fatal crash.
However, family members are more troubled by Ronald Bruce Hicks’ first encounter with the court system.
Troopers charged Hicks with felony death by motor vehicle, driving while impaired, and reckless driving to endanger for the Aug. 18 wreck that killed Zebulon resident Jessica Lynn Dixon.

TDA moving forward with tourism promotion plan
The Franklin County Tourism Development Authority is moving forward with plans they figure will market and promote what they do, as well as the tourism resources in Franklin County.
The board met with Franklinton High School digital media teacher Michael Kearney to discuss how he and his class can bolster the group’s website.

New steakhouse set to open in Louisburg
Louisburg is getting a new steakhouse that’s scheduled to open in December.
Ribeyes, Inc. announced that it would oepn the newest Ribeyes Steakhouse at 32 Golden Leaf Circle (behind Bojangles).
The new steakhouse will be in the building formerly occupied by Los Sauses Mexican Restaurant which just closed.

Cub Scout Pack 520 performs at Bunn Elementary PTA Meeting
Cub Scout Pack 520 of Zebulon opened the Bunn Elementary School PTA meeting on Thursday, Nov. 5, with the color guard carrying the flag, the pack doing a sing-along and leading the Pledge of Allegiance. The pack also signed the Cub Scout Promise in sign language to show it’s awareness of hearing limitations.
Pack 520 meets most Tuesdays at 7 p.m. at Poplar Springs Baptist Church in Zebulon.

Locals work to help put food on the table
Here’s a sobering statistic, in this pre-holiday season: More than one in seven American households struggled to put enough food on the table in 2008, the latest tally that is available although there is a likelihood that 2009 will be worse.
As it is, the 2008 number was the worst since the U.S. Department of Agriculture began tracking food security levels in 1995.
The 14.6 percentage of U.S. households amounts to about 49 million people who are struggling to find enough to eat.

For years, Charlotte and North Carolina boasted that two of the top four banks in the country were headquartered here. Coupled with other strong regional and community banks, this state was a major financial center. Losing Wachovia’s corporate headquarters took some luster from that claim, but it appears we are in danger of losing the corporate headquarters of Bank of America; that loss could be devastating.

Wildcats Rally For Win
BUNN -- Allowing a touchdown just before halftime can often be a demoralizing fate for a high school football team -- especially during a close game.
But it only seemed to embolden the Bunn Wildcats during last Friday’s home showdown against Richlands in the first round of the Class 2-A State Playoffs.
Richlands connected on a touchdown pass with only 20 ticks remaining before intermission to move ahead by five points.

Red Rams’ season ends with road loss
FAIRMONT -- The Fairmont Golden Tornadoes rallied with a late 21-yard touchdown pass from Demetrius Washington to Doug Blue with less than one minute remaining on Friday to advance to the second round of the Class 2-A State Football Playoffs by defeating Franklinton 22-14.
“We hurt ourselves with penalties,’’ said FHS head coach Clark Harrell, whose club closed with a 5-7 overall record. “We had a couple of penalties that helped keep (Fairmont’s) last drive alive.’’

David Bell to return as Mudcats’ manager
ZEBULON -- The Cincinnati Reds have announced that manager David Bell, hitting coach Ryan Jackson and athletic trainer Jimmy Mattocks will return to the Carolina Mudcats’ staff for the 2010 campaign.
Tom Brown, who for the last three seasons has served as pitching coach for Sarasota of the Class A Florida State League, will serve in that capacity on the Mudcats’ staff.

Junior Rams Tie For Crown
FRANKLINTON -- Clark Harrell’s teachings have started to pay off at Franklinton -- and not just on the varsity level.
In addition to the varsity squad reaching the Class 2-A State Football Playoffs for the second consecutive season, the FHS JV contingent also enjoyed an oustanding campaign.
Franklinton, with Trent Sanders serving as head coach, went 6-3 overall and 5-1 in the Northern Carolina Conference. That put the Red Rams into a first-place tie with Bunn for league supremacy.
