FREDERICKSBURG, VA – Baxter Guy Dean, 79, of Fredericksburg, died Monday in Fredericksburg.

Baxter was a native of Franklin County. He was a son of the late C.T. and Myrtle Parrish Dean, and was preceded in death by his brother, Grattis Dean.

He graduated from Edward Best High School, Louisburg, in 1948 and North Carolina State University in1952, and was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity. He was a 1st Lt. in the Army and served in Korea.

Baxter worked in the Hertford County Extension Office, and was owner of Wayne Feeds of Robersonville, Swift & Co. of Yadkinville, NC. Then moved to Wilson, NC in 1979 and worked as real estate agent and investor.

Due to failing health of his wife Thea, Baxter moved to Fredericksburg, Va. in 2006 to live with their daughter Kaye and her family.

A graveside service was conducted 11 a.m. Friday by Dr. Reggie Rushing at Oakwood Cemetery, Hwy 401 in Louisburg, NC.  The family received friends at the home of Myrtle King, 615 N. Main St. in Louisburg immediately following the service.

Baxter is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Thea B. Dean; daughters and sons-in-law, Kaye and Ray Pegelow of Fredericksburg, April and John King of New Bern; brother and sister-in-law, C.T. and Marion Dean of Louisburg; sister-in-law, Melba Dean of Palm Beach, FL; grandchildren, Allison Pegelow, Phillip Pegelow, Ashley King and Jay King. Baxter was also loved by his many nieces and nephews – Nancy, Claude, Laura, Burges, Allan, Jed, and Edie.  Baxter also enjoyed his many cousins, especially Jackie Dean; Danny Ray and her husband Roger.  The family would especially like to thank Sheilla for her many years of loving care and his many friends and caregivers from Home & Heart Health who were always there for him and his family.

Papa (as he was affectionately known) was loved by all.  Everyone he met quickly became his friend.  He would tell you about his ‘dog fever’; surprise you with his myriad collection of novelty items including his gorilla mask, snake, spiders, and bugs; or mysteriously talk to you from the PA system on his car.  If he found out you were anything but an NCSU Wolfpack fan, he would lovingly harass you relentlessly.  He will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved him!
