SYLVESTER C. MCARTHUR SR.


FRANKLINTON - Sylvester Conly McArthur Sr.,  96, died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2013. Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 28, at Kinches Chapel Christian Church, Franklinton, with the Rev. Willie R. Nixon III officiating. Interment followed in the Hawkins Chapel Missionary Baptist Church cemetery.

He was born in Lumberton, the son of the late Josh and Hattie Jane Martin McArthur. After high school, he moved to Baltimore, Md. to find employment and attend Morgan State College. He began his career as one of the first data entry punch card system operators for the Social Security Administration, retiring after 30 years of service.

Surviving: daughter, Joyce Johnson; son, Donald McArthur (Yolanda); daughter, Angela Flager (Claude); sisters, Rosie Lee Wright, Edith Sawyer, Christine Bland, Hattie Mae Cooper, and the Honorable Frances Cummings; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his  first wife, Rosa McArthur, and his second wife, Annye Patricia Murray McArthur., and a son, Sylveser C. McArthur Jr.
