"BILL" WILLIAM A. COX
August 29, 1924 - January 20, 2017


RALEIGH - William Avery "Bill" Cox, 92, of Raleigh, died Friday night. Bill was the son of the late James Avery and Oza Cooke Cox. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lurli H. Cox; sisters, Jane C. Gordon, Ann C. Hadlock and Sue C. Gilliam.

Bill graduated from Franklinton High School and then went on to attend Oak Ridge Military School. He served in the Navy in World War II in Saipan. He then went on to N.C. State and graduated with a degree in Textile Engineering in 1949. He was an inspector for the North Carolina Rate Bureau for Workers Comp for 50 years.

Bill's passion was flying; he was a multi-engine and instrument rated pilot for over 43 years. He met Amelia Earhart in 1931. He flew many influential people in his flying career. He was a member of the Carolina Aero Club. He also enjoyed square dancing and traveling.

A graveside service will be held 3 p.m. Tuesday at Fairview Cemetery in Franklinton. The family will receive friends following the service.

Bill is survived by his longtime companion and sweet-heart, Susan Riggs of the home; son, Billy Cox of Sarasota, FL; granddaughter, Savannah Platt Cox; several nieces and nephews.
