Alice Mae "Macy" Holmes Berry, 87, died on February 11, 2017 of cancer at Vitas Hospice at Baylor All Saints Hospital. Mrs. Berry was born on April 4, 1929 in Louisburg, North Carolina to Percy Clifton Holmes, Sr. and Susie C. West Holmes. She was one of fifteen children and would entertain her grandchildren with stories of growing up in such a large family.

She married Reuben Walton Berry, Jr. in 1949 and worked as a telephone operator until their move to Chicago, Illinois in 1954. After several moves they settled in the Chicago suburb of Arlington Heights, where she was involved in her children's school P.T.A. clubs, volunteered weekly at the Lutheran Home for the Aged, was a member of Goudy Questers Antique Club, a supporter of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and a member of several book and bridge clubs. After Reuben's retirement, in 1989, they moved to Pinehurst North Carolina, where they spent the next 24 years enjoying being near their siblings and having frequent visits from children and grandchildren.

In 2013, she and Reuben moved to Fort Worth, Texas to be closer to their children. Alice and Reuben were active church members; among the founding members of Prince of Peace Methodist Church in Elk Grove Village, long time members of the Arlington Heights United Methodist Church in Arlington Heights and the Village Chapel in Pinehurst. Alice joined the Genesis United Methodist Church when she moved to Fort Worth. She has been an active resident at Brookdale Broadway Plaza, serving on the Resident's Council as Grounds Chairman and spending her time visiting with friends, playing bridge, needlepointing, and baking her famous poppy seed bread that she shared with neighbors and friends. Alice had an incredible love of traveling and she and Reuben travelled the world, sharing this passion with her children, grandchildren, family and friends. When asked what her favorite trips were, she always replied, "the ones I took my grandchildren on to Africa, Alaska and South America."

She is preceded in death by her husband Reuben. Survivors: Daughter Angela Berry Donahue and her husband Dr. David Donahue of Fort Worth; son Gregory Walton Berry of Fort Worth; five grandchildren; two great-grandsons; sister, Betsy Holmes Greene of Troy, North Carolina; sisters-in-law, Frances Holmes of Raleigh, Elmar Holmes and Betty Ray Holmes of Louisburg; and many nieces and nephews. A private memorial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be given to the American Cancer Society or charity of choice.
