MIAMI, Fla. -- Judy M. Oakes of Miami, Fla., passed away peacefully Wednesday, June 11, following a period of declining health.

Judy, the daughter of Clarence and Nellie Murphy, grew up in the Red Bud community of Franklin County. She graduated from Edward Best High School and Miller-Motte Business School in Wilmington, NC.

Following graduation Judy moved to Raleigh where she met and married Norvel (Fred) Oakes.

She worked several years with Sanders Ford of Raleigh but then spent the remainder of her career in the education arena working at NC State University, Florida Christian School in Miami, and Florida International University before she retired.

In addition to her parents, Judy was preceded in death by her husband and a sister, Mary Ann Murphy.

She is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth Oakes of Miami, Fla.; a brother Jimmy/JC Murphy (Alice) of Louisburg; nephews Matt Murphy and Brent Murphy of Louisburg; a niece, Kelly Pearce, of Raleigh; and several cousins.

A memorial service is being planned for a future date.
