NANCY W. CREWS


HENDERSON - Nancy Fleming Winston Crews, 86, of 95 Old Poplar Creek Road, Henderson, N.C., died Saturday, February 23, 2008 in Raleigh, N.C.

Born June 18, 1921 in Youngsville, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Lemuel Eugene and Mamie Fleming Perkinson Winston. She was preceded in death by her husband, Barnes McArle “B. Mac” Crews, and a sister, Frances Winston Mullen.

Mrs. Crews graduated as valedictorian from Youngsville High School in 1937, from Mars Hill Junior College in 1939 where she served as Marshal, and from East Carolina University in 1941 with a degree in Home Economics and Science. Her teaching career spanned 37 years, beginning in Rolesville, with the majority of the years at Dabney School in Vance County. She originally taught high school subjects and spent the bulk of her career teaching the 1st and 2nd grades. Her involvement in civic and professional organizations reflected her passions for education, genealogy, gardening, and Christian outreach. She was active in Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary teaching sorority; treasurer of the Vance County Historical Society for 11 years; served in various capacities including Regent of the Old Bute D.A.R. chapter, and was past president of the Henderson Rosemont Garden Club. She was an active member and former Sunday School teacher at Poplar Creek Baptist Church. Her entire life has been an inspiration and model of family/Christian love and service with humility.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, February 27, 2008, at 2:00 p.m., at Poplar Creek Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Tony Evans. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Surviving are a daughter, Betty Crews Cherry and husband Tom, of Raleigh, N.C.; two sons, Robert Winston Crews and wife Kathy, of Mocksville, N.C., and Donald Fleming “Donnie” Crews and wife Beth, of Raleigh, N.C.; four grandchildren, David Thomas Cherry and wife Caroline, of Bethesda, Maryland, Debra Cherry Houck and husband Greg, of Apex, N.C., and Robert Winston Crews Jr. and James Tatum Crews, both of Mocksville, N.C.; and two great-grandchildren, Cole Houck and Camille Houck.

The family received friends Tuesday, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home, 95 Old Poplar Creek Road, Henderson.

Because of her passion for Christian Missionary work, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Poplar Creek Baptist Church Missionary Fund, c/o Vickie Ball, 1371 Poplar Creek Road, Henderson, N.C. 27537.
