Eight FCS teachers earn their National Board Certification
One of the highest recognitions a teacher can earn is National Board Certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.
Franklin County has enjoyed a rich crop of newly National Board Certified Teachers over the past several years and 2010 is no different. Eight FCS teachers from six different schools were recognized for earning the certification Tuesday night at a dinner held in Louisburg.

Newton, a starter from Day One, is certainly closing out his standout career in style.

LOUISBURG -- Ariel Phelps delivered yet another double-double on Tuesday as the Louisburg Lady Hurricanes rolled to a 71-37 victory over Region X rival Wake Tech in women’s basketball action at historic Holton Gymnasium on the LC campus.
Phelps led LC in both scoring (14) and rebounding (11). Monique Williams was also effective for Louisburg College with 12 points and eight boards.

The state Bureau of Investigation continues to probe an apparent suicide that two separate people have said law enforcement and jailers were warned about.
One of them even claims that jailers provoked Ashley Ann Six, who was discovered inside her jail cell on Jan. 18 — dead from an apparent hanging.

Missing Bunn teen found
Authorities found a missing Bunn teen on Sunday, nearly a week after his parents reported him missing.
According to Franklin County Sheriff’s Cpl. Kenny Harp, the parents of Joshua Daniel Perry last saw him walking away from their home in the Justice community on Monday.

Cardwell case continued
A domestic violence case against a former Louisburg department head has been continued until next month.
Brent Cardwell appeared in Franklin County District Court on Monday to face misdemeanor charges of assault on a female and communicating threats.
The case was continued until Feb. 23.

Jobless claims concern ESC
The state Employment Security Commission is preparing to release county-by-county unemployment numbers for December.
But it’s the January numbers that have local employment staff concerned.
“In December, the number of claims was about 250, which is equal to the previous year,” said Mike Brown, Franklin County’s branch manager of the Employment Security Commission.

Wastewater spills reported
Franklin County’s public utilities department recorded wastewater spills as a result of Monday’s torrent.
According to county staff, the wastewater overflows were detected early Monday and lasted about two hours.
About 1,500 gallons of untreated wastewater was lost at the Franklinton pump station and 2,100 gallons were lost from the manhole on Cedar Creek Road.

Relief efforts continue for the people of Haiti, a Caribbean nation still reeling from a devastating earthquake that’s killed 150,000 and has countless others scrambling for life-saving rations.
On Friday, celebrities organized a global benefit that, as of Tuesday, had raised more than $58 million.
