JAMES E. WHELESS, SR., MD
CHAPIN, S.C. – Dr. James E. Wheless, Sr. passed away on May 4, 2009, at 82 years of age.  Dr. Wheless came from very humble beginnings, growing up on a tobacco farm in Justice, NC.  He served our country in World War II in the 6th Ranger Infantry Battalion in the Pacific area.  He became a primary care physician and devoted his life to the pursuit of helping and healing others in Roanoke, VA.  He served his community for 34 years and gained the love and respect of his patients.  At age 66 he retired and enjoyed being a devoted husband, father, and grandparent.  Because of a chronic medical condition, he moved to South Carolina to be near his daughter and grandchildren.

He is predeceased by his father, Ernest Jordan Wheless, and his mother, Mozelle McGregor Wheless. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Carolyn (Cammy); his two children, Dr. James E. Wheless, Jr. and wife, Jamie of Kannapolis, NC; and his daughter, Carol Wheless Weathers and husband, Ron of Chapin, SC; 4 grandchildren, James Allen Weathers, Ashley Lovelace Weathers, James E. Wheless, III, William Avery Wheless; his sister, Annie Wheless Dean, and his three nieces, Jane Dean, Karen Dean Adams and Marcia Dean Ahalt.

Many will remember him for his witty outlook on life, his love and dedication to his profession, and his love for his family.  He was a devoted Christian and we are joyful that he is in the hands of God.  Our thanks go out to Mary and Mary Caregivers, Tri County Hospice, and Carroll Campbell Place for their loving care.

A Memorial service will be held at Chapin United Methodist Church on Saturday, May 9, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. with visitation following the service at the church.  If you wish to remember him with a memorial gift, please consider the organ fund of his church, Chapin United Methodist Church, 415 Lexington Avenue, Chapin, SC  29036 or the Rescue Mission, P.O. Box 11525, Roanoke, VA 24022-1525.  Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Chapin Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
