DR. NASH H. UNDERWOOD
WAKE FOREST - Dr. Nash H. Underwood, 84, died Sunday, May 10, 2009 after a brief battle with cancer. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, May 12, at Wake Forest Baptist Church. Burial was private.

He was born in Roseboro, where he grew up on the family farm. He graduated from Wake Forest College and the Medical College of Virginia. After serving as a Navy officer in WWII and as an Air Force captain in the Korean War, he settled in Durham where he taught part time at UNC Dental School and became North Carolina’s first pedodontist.

After several years, he and his wife, Janis, returned to Wake Forest where he practiced general dentistry until his retirement in 1981. In 1984, missing dentistry and people, he opened a practice in Youngsville where he worked for several years.

Dr. Underwood was also involved in many civic and community activities.

Surviving: wife, Janis; daughter, Judy Gould (Steve) of Wake Forest; son, Martin Underwood (Lori) of Boca Raton, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wake Forest College Birthplace Society, P. O. Box 494, Wake Forest, NC 27587, or to the Wake Forest Baptist Church, 107 E. South Avenue, Wake Forest, NC 27587.
