DOROTHY SMITH
LEXINGTON - Dorothy Southerland Smith, 85, of Westside Dr., Lexington, N.C., went to be with her Lord and Savior on April 1. Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 4, at First Reformed United Church of Christ, conducted by the Rev. Mike Hooper. Burial followed in First Reformed United Church of Christ Columbarium.

Mrs. Smith was born June 9, 1920 in Vance County to James Sabat and Maude Marie Faulkner Southerland. She was a faithful and wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, friend, and pet lover. Dot was a wonderful inspiration to her family and friends. She will be truly missed by those that knew and loved her. She was a dedicated member of First Reformed United Church of Christ in Lexington, where she served in many capacities throughout the years, and enjoyed bring a member of the Friendship Club at the church. She volunteered her time and service in the community and was a member of various organizations throughout the years. She was the former owner and operator of Carefree Kiddie Daycare on Westside Drive in Lexington for over 30 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph (Joe) John Smith; two sons, Joseph John “Johnny” and Edward “Eddie” Smith; a granddaughter, Kathy Susan Smith; a great grandson, John Paul Southerland Lewis; a sister, Jennie S. Hoyle; and brothers, Samuel, James Melville “Billy Jack,” Thomas Richard, Charles Peter and Solon.

Surviving are: daughters, Sandra Smith Hutchens of Lexington; grandchildren, Scarlett Lapish, Dale Hutchens, Donna Nichols and husband Buford, “Nicky,” Jeff Hutchens, Dorothy Lewis and husband Michael, Linda “Sue Bee” Smith, Nichole Smith, Margie Smith, and Zachary Greer Smith; 14 great grandchildren; 10 great great grandchildren; brothers, Tasker Brooks, Raeford, Henry, Jobe Kert, and Robert Larry Southerland; sister, Carole Southerland.

The family received friends from 10:00 to 11:00 AM Tuesday in the church parlor.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to First Reformed United Church of Christ, 104 East Center Street, Lexington, NC 27292.
