CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Fred Daniel Foster, Sr. passed away on Saturday, March 18, 2006 at Martha Jefferson Hospital.
He was born October 23, 1932 in Franklin County, North Carolina and was the son of the late Tollie Gray and Olive Newman Foster.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 51 years, Ann Grissom Foster; three children and six grandchildren: Susan Wade of Crozet, VA, Sarah and Dustin Wade; Nancy Balchunas and husband Patrick of Springfield, VA, Anna and Elle; Dan and wife Melanie of Ruckersville, VA, Caitlin and Adriene. He is also survived by two brothers, Durward Foster of Gaston Lake, NC, Alton Foster and wife Sandra Smith Foster of Henderson, NC; and one sister, Martha Lou Harper and husband, Dr. Kenneth Harper of Elon College, NC.
After serving four years in the Air Force, Mr. Foster received his BS Degree in Agronomy at North Carolina State University in 1960. He was Assistant County Agent in Halifax, NC until his employment by Virginia Power in 1965. After retiring as a Rates and Contract Consultant in the Western Division in 1992, he focused on church activities and favorite hobbies. He served as chairman of the Board of Deacons, Clerk of Session, Soup Kitchen Co-captain with his wife and a member of various committees at the First Presbyterian Church. An agronomist at heart, he especially enjoyed home gardening and working with the Piedmont Master Gardeners, having served as president of the group and editor of the newsletter, The Cultivator and Web Master.
At 11 AM Tuesday March 21, 2006 a memorial service was held at First Presbyterian Church with a reception at noon given by the Elizabeth Circle. A committal service was held at Monticello Memory Gardens.
The family received friends at Hill and Wood Funeral Home from 5 to 7 PM on Monday, March 20, 2006.
In lieu of flowers those who wish may send contributions to The First Presbyterian Church-HV AC fund or to the American Cancer Fund.
The family wishes to thank the staff of the Cardwell Center and Martha Jefferson Hospital Seventh Floor for their attentive care and tireless support during this short illness.
