ELEANOR PHILLIPS SMITH

TRENTON, NC - Eleanor Phillips Smith, 89, passed away on Tuesday, April 29, 2014. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis W. Smith; a daughter Betty Lou Smith, and parents William Edward Phillips and Mable Elizabeth Griffin.

Survivors include her daughter, Rosemary Champion and husband Phillip; Granddaughters, Paige Triplett and husband, Trip and Mary Elise and husband Mike Chenewoth; Great-grandchildren, Joe, Jace, and Charlie; Brothers, Horace Phillips and wife Agnes Faye, Don Phillips and wife Faye, William Phillips and wife Janie; Sister, Audrey Bray and husband Walter.

She was a retired school teacher for Wayne County and was a part of the North Carolina Retired Teachers Association. She was also a member in the Forever Young Club, Lanie’s Chapel Christian Church, and was awarded the volunteer of the year for Jones Elementary School. She graduated from Trenton School, attended Louisburg College, and graduated from ECTC. She was also a graduate from the Lay Academy at Barton College.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 3, 2014 at Howard-Carter Funeral Home with Pastor Jim Cullen officiating. Visitation will be held from 2 to 3 prior to service. Memorials may be made to The Boys and Girls Clubs of North Central North Carolina, 943-O West Andrews Avenue, Henderson, NC 27536 or Lanie’s Chapel, 5333 Hwy 58N, Kinston, NC 28501
