Gail Strother Matt

Franklinton, NC -- Gail Strother Matt, age 73, died on April 2, 2022 with her family by her side. She was the daughter of the late Robert Edmond Strother and Edna Newton Strother.

Gail was born in Granville County on December 7, 1948 and was raised in the Wilton area. When she was 12, her family moved to Snow Hill, NC. She attended Green Central High School where she was a majorette and was crowned Miss Moose before graduating in 1966. She attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she received her bachelor's degree in elementary education. After graduating from college, she moved to Raleigh where she raised her daughters. She taught at Wilton Elementary School for over 20 years.

Gail had a big impact on so many students throughout her time as an educator and was known for being compassionate and having a witty sense of humor. She had many loves in life including her dogs, the beach, a good cocktail and an ice cold "Pepsi Cola".

Gail is survived by her long-time companion Jacky Edmundson of Franklinton; daughter, Amanda Chappell and husband, Brian, of Raleigh; daughter, Melissa Mallery and husband, Kevin, of Youngsville; daughter, Meagan Maddox and husband, Clint, of Charlotte; her brother Robert Edmond Strother Jr. and wife, Denell of Franklinton; and eight grandchildren. She will be deeply missed by her friends and family.

A celebration of Gail's life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to your local animal shelter would be appreciated.

The Matt family is being proudly served by Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home, Oxford, NC. Online Memorials: https://www.gnvfuneralhome.com/
