ALPS L. VAN DYKE
KITTRELL - Alps Lewis Van Dyke Jr., 80, died Friday, Dec. 21, 2007 at Duke Medical Center. A memorial service was conducted Sunday, Dec. 23, in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel, with the Revs. Robert Hammond, Mark Richardson and Frank Sossamon officiating.

He was born in Vance County, the son of the late Alps L. Van Dyke Sr. and Clyde Newton Van Dyke. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II, and was owner and operator of the former Van Dyke’s Grocery in Kittrell for more than 40 years.

Mr. Van Dyke was a member of Union Chapel United Methodist Church and was a commissioner for the Town of Kittrell for 30 years.

Surviving: his wife, Sally Ann Overton Van Dyke; daughters, Cheryl Van Dyke Chorba of Beaufort and Sandra Van Dyke Pernell (Steve) of Henderson a sister, Mary Van Dyke Chaka of Easley, S.C. and four grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Union Chapel United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 6479 Raleigh Road, Kittrell, NC 27544.
