A Franklinton woman died on Monday, days after she sustaining injuries in a late-night four-wheeler accident.
According to a report by Dep. W.J. Wiggins, Elizabeth “Niki” Edwards was riding an all-terrain vehicle with a group of friends on a path at 42 Perry Way, a private road next to her 43 Perry Way home, when she ran into a cable strung across the path.
The accident was reported at about 11:45 p.m. on March 4.

A Youngsville man was transported to a mental health facility after trying to set his girlfriend on fire on Saturday night.
According to deputies, Gary Norman was not successful in his attempt to injure Chloe Reynolds, but he did set fire to their 20 Deerfield Court residence.
According to the Youngsville Fire Department and a report by Dep. J. Maloney, emergency responders were called out to the scene on an arson call.

A proposed budget for Franklin County schools’ next fiscal year was unveiled Monday night and projects a $708,217 increase in current expenses, most of which involve the opening of the new Franklinton High School and the new Early College High School building.
But even as the school board’s budget committee — which includes all school board members — looked over the numbers, Assistant Supt. for Business and Finance Doug Moore warned them that “this is not the budget we’ll end up with.

A Louisburg man and Nashville woman were sent to jail for their roles in swindling an elderly woman out of her life savings.
Superior Court Judge Richard Baddour Jr. sentenced Aaron Pittman, 56 to between 96 months and 125 months in jail and ordered the Louisburg man to pay $122,000 in restitution.
The judge also sentenced Mildred Dew, 58, to between 13 months and 16 months in prison and five years of probation on March 3, following a trial in Granville County Superior Court.

Jared Wynne died in a hunting accident more than a year ago.
However, his spirit lives on through his family and the Gold Sand Fire Department.
With the aid of Wynne’s family, the Franklin County fire station has established the Jared K. Wynne Memorial Fund for Fire Prevention.

Joyce, Natalie and Sharon Williams of Franklinton proudly announce the birth of their little sister, Stephanie Ivory Williams. She was born Feb. 8, 2011 at 3:19 a.m. at Duke University Medical Center. She weighed 3 pounds, 2 ounces and was 16 1/2 inches long.

On Sunday, Audley Anderson of Cary reported that a prior night’s acquaintance swiped his 2005 Dodge Magnum.
Army Pfc. Vernon C. Harris received Coin of Excellence from the 434th Brigade Commander for Holiday Block Leave 2010.
Harris is an S-1 award/promotion clerk, assigned to the 1st Battalion, 19th Field Artillery at Fort Sill, Okla. He has served in the military for two years.
He is the son of Etheline Harris of Rocky Ford Road, Louisburg, N.C.

Although the calendar indicates it’s still nearly two weeks until the March 20 official debut of spring, there already are some unpleasant indications that the season is upon us.
In the last few days, we’ve had a young woman fatally injured in a four-wheeler accident, a young Nash County man killed in a high speed motorcycle crash and several thunderstorms rolling across the area and even spawning a small tornado just over the county line in Rolesville.
GOOD MORNING: We got a bit of badly needed rain locally over the weekend, but we could use quite a bit more. And, if our luck holds out, we might just possibly get it Thursday or Friday.
According to records at the Louisburg Water Plant, we received .04 of an inch on Saturday and .68 Sunday for a total of just a fraction under ¾ of an inch.
In today’s economy, it’s hard to imagine that getting fired is a good thing.
However, if I was Marisol Valles Garcia, I’d gladly be collecting unemployment.
To tell the truth, I don’t even know that I would need that.
A pink slip would be just fine.

Good role models are important, but especially so in single parent homes. A group of male students at Shaw University in Raleigh are giving new meaning to the term gentlemen while reinforcing that importance.
Each Wednesday about 20 Shaw University “Gentlemen of Distinction” show up at Raleigh’s Ligon Middle School, dressed in coats and ties to mentor a group of specially selected young boys, many of whom come from single parent, economically depressed homes.
YOUNGSVILLE - Martha Allene Ketring, 76, died Friday, March 4, 2011 at Franklin Regional Medical Center. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, March 8, in the chapel of Bright Funeral Home. Burial followed in Pine Forest Memorial Gardens.
FRANKLINTON - Betty Fay Ray, 69, died Sunday March 6, 2011 at her residence. A memorial service will be held at her residence (252 Gordon Moore Rd. Franklinton) at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 10, with the Rev. Carl Hunter officiating.
LOUISBURG - Deborah Kay Babb, 61, died Sunday March 6, 2011, at Franklin Regional Medical Center. Graveside services were held Tuesday, March 8, at Elmwood Cemetery with Dr. William Wakefield officiating.
