In the aftermath of the financial crisis and increases in unemployment, underemployment, and uncertainty, there is great skepticism about powerful elites, organizations, and interest groups. Every large institution, with the interesting exception of the military, has suffered declines in public confidence.

LOUISBURG - Nathaniel Wayne Hines, 26, died Oct. 20, 2010. Funeral service was Monday, Oct. 25, in the chapel of Cornerstone Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ron Wallace officiating. A private burial for the family will be held at a later date.
GASTONIA - Odessa Strickland Smith, 89, died Thursday, Oct. 21, 2010. Funeral service was held Sunday, Oct. 24, at The Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, with Pastor Jim DuMond officiating. Burial was at Daniels Lutheran Church cemetery.
Timmy Baynes, executive director of the Kerr-Tar Regional Council of Governments in Henderson, was elected to the National Association of Development Organizations (NADO) 2010 – 2011 Board of Directors on Aug. 31 at NADO’s annual business meeting.
The meeting was held in conjunction with the association’s 43rd annual training conference in San Diego, Calif.
Cory Lawrence, a serviceman with Wake Electric Membership Corporation (EMC) in Wake Forest, had the honor of competing in the 12th Pole Top Rescue Competition for North Carolina’s electric cooperatives. Lawrence has been with Wake EMC for 10 years. Cory and his wife, Dana, live in Youngsville with their daughter, Grace Anne.
Wake Electric of Wake Forest recently announced that 39 teachers in Johnston, Franklin, Granville, Wake, Nash, Durham and Vance counties have been awarded Bright Ideas grants, totaling more than $50,000 in grant monies. The grants will be used for a variety of classroom programs throughout the school year.
For the third consecutive year, Jackson Neal, right, and Carvel Cheves have won the 2010 Grand Champion Hair Sheep at the NC State Fair. The Cheves family owns and operates the Clover C Farms in Bunn, and Jackson has been exhibiting sheep for them for the past 4 years.

BUNN -- What started out as a defensive standout turned into an offensive explosion in the third quarter for the Bunn Wildcats.
After not scoring a touchdown on offense until the 1:34 mark of the second period, the Wildcats erupted after the break and went on to defeat Franklinton by a 43-20 margin last Friday in a duel for second place in the Northern Carolina Conference football standings.

FRANKLIN COUNTY -- Precious few are the campaigns that end without at least one Franklin County volleyball team making a deep run in the postseason.
But it won’t happen in 2010 as each county squad was defeated -- in uncharacteristic fashion -- last Saturday in the opening round of the Class 1-A State Playoffs.
WARRENTON -- Louisburg excelled on both sides of the ball en route to posting a 42-6 road football victory last Friday at Warren County in a Northern Carolina Conference event.
The NCC decision was the first of the year for the Warriors, who are now 2-7 to go with a 1-3 league mark. Warren County remained winless at 0-9 and 0-5.

BUNN -- Before the game, Louisburg College football coach John Sala stressed that his club would probably have to play flawlessly in order to be competitive against always-tough Georgia Military College -- which is always one of the toughest teams on the Hurricanes’ gridiron schedule.
MARYVILLE, TENN. -- North Carolina Wesleyan College’s football team bounced back from last week’s disappointing league loss to CNU with a 34-16 USA South road victory at Maryville College last Saturday, ruining the Scots’ 2010 Homecoming.
The win leaves the Blue & Gold with a 4-3 overall record and 3-1 mark in conference action.
FRANKLINTON -- Franklinton High School will kick off its 2010-11 basketball schedule with four straight road games -- beginning with a trip Nov. 23 to meet Durham School of the Arts at the historic DSA Gymnasium.
FHS’ first home matchup will be Dec. 10 against the Southern Nash Firebirds.

Proponents for an area slaughter house/regional farmer’s market will host an interest meeting this coming Tuesday.
The Cooperative Extension Office secured a grant so that Peter Appleton and Phil Hamilton of Mt. Olive College could peform a feasibility study on the need for such a facility.

The war of words over water between Franklinton and Franklin County continues.
In a letter dated Oct. 5, county staff notified town officials that shutting off its water supply last month put the town in breach of its 40-year contract.
In a response dated Oct. 18, Franklinton Mayor Elic Senter said the county was mistaken.

State, local and federal candidates got one more chance to present their platforms to the public before the Nov. 2 election.
The Greater Franklin County Chamber of Commerce hosted a candidate’s forum Tuesday night — drawing candidates in races ranging from the county commission to the state Senate and Congress.
And representatives for candidates in the U.S. Senate race were also on hand.
The Murphy House recalled nearly 5,000 pounds of ready-to-eat pork barbecue products that may be contaminated with salmonella.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced the decision on Wednesday.
The recall includes 4,920 pounds of pork packaged as such:
