LOUISBURG - Louis Thurman Perdue, 72, a lifelong native of Franklin County, died peacefully on Friday, September 24, 2010, at Duke University Medical Center after a lengthy illness. He was a lifelong farmer and member of Trinity United Methodist Church. He was the son of the late Thurman Hight Perdue and the late Mary Helen Cottrell Perdue, born on June 16, 1938. He was preceded in death by a sister, Martha Ann P. Peoples, and a brother, Philip Sterling Perdue.
CONWAY, S.C. - Benjamin Elexy “Benjie” Edge, Jr. of Conway, S.C., died September 27, 2010 at his residence. He was a native of Conway and the Hand Community, and the widower of the late Jean Lowell Johnson Edge (formerly of Louisburg, N.C.) and a son of the late Benjamin Elexy Edge, Sr. and Charlotte Anna Bourne Edge. Mr. Edge was the owner of the Edge Stables and a retired farmer. He was a Trustee on the North Myrtle Beach School Advisory Board (1974-1986), a Trustee on the Grand Strand Career Center Advisory Board (1975-1985), and Past Chairman (1984-1986) of the Grand Strand Career Center Advisory Board.
Michael and Sandra Pearce, parents, and David Pearce, big brother, are proud to announce the birth of Gentry Grace Pearce, born July 15, 2010 at Nash General Hospital in Rocky Mount. She weighed 8 pounds, 8 ounces and was 20 inches long.

Vance-Granville Community College has announced that 13 students earned Dean’s List honors for the Summer Semester that ended in August. To qualify for the Dean’s List, a student had to maintain a 3.5 grade-point average and have no grade lower than “B” while carrying at least 12 semester hours, according to VGCC Vice President of Instruction Angela Ballentine.

We build giant, multi-million dollar buildings and then buy fleets of school buses, labs full of computers, etc., and then use them — at most — 180 days a year. Show us an industry or other business that could survive with that business plan.
GOOD MORNING: Whoopeeeee!!! It rained, and it rained, and it rained some more. According to the little rain gauge on my front porch Tuesday morning, we had received a total of 3.8 inches since Saturday. And, if I’m not mistaken, that amount represents our total rainfall not only since Saturday, but for the entire month of September as well.

When it was first introduced, it was suppose to bring worlds together with the click of a mouse.
Of course, after seeing our own website bloggers hash their issues out in the blogosphere, under the anonymity that the Internet provides, I wonder is it doing more to rip us all apart.

RALEIGH – I am, by nature, an optimistic fellow.
Despite North Carolina’s summer dry spell, for example, I haven’t given up on my lawn. I still get out the mower each weekend, check the gas and oil, crank up an audiobook, and spend exactly five minutes trimming the patch of crabgrass that is the only green and growing part of my front yard.
Students enrolled in Bioprocess Technology courses at Vance-Granville Community College recently had the opportunity to see for themselves the next steps they could take in their education.

How detached have some people become to how food makes it to their supper table?
During a legislative hearing on agriculture issues, a witness, complaining about the “mess” and “smells” associated with farms located near her new home, demanded strict laws that would allow farms to be shutdown. An alert panelist asked, “Ma’am, then where will you get your food?” The lady answered “At the grocery store across the street, of course.”
Franklin County sheriff’s deputies are looking for suspects accused of stealing a car and wrecking it shortly thereafter.

FRANKLINTON -- After a back-and-forth duel the entire way, last Friday’s key Northern Carolina Conference football matchup between Northwest Halifax and Franklinton came down to a simple test of 2-point conversions in overtime.
Franklinton, taking possession first in the extra session, made its 2-pointer on a dive from Reggie Williams following a touchdown.
LOUISBURG -- The Louisburg College Lady Hurricanes earned a key Region X victory last Saturday by defeating the University of South Carolina-Lancaster at home.
Freshman Kelly Wolz potted two goals as the Lasy Hurricanes rolled to a 4-1 decision.

LOUISBURG -- Roanoke Rapids’ defense of its Northern Carolina Conference regular season football championship began last Friday night with a heavy dose of offense.
And when that happens, it’s a certainty that Justin Rawles has been a major reason for the Yellow Jackets’ success.
Strange as it may sound, this is one of the most interesting volleyball seasons I’ve covered during my 15 years in Franklin County.
Not because any of the local teams have a shot at a state title. Realistically, that isn’t the case. But then again, you never know.
