Two Franklin County youth recently received the second installment of their $1,000 college scholarships during the Franklin County Cattlemen’s Association Christmas meeting on Dec. 10.  Left to right:  Gilbert Wheeler, son of Ed and Laurel Wheeler near Franklinton, and Matt Cooke, son of Keith and Connie Cooke in the White Level Community, are given checks for the upcoming semester from Greg Wheeler, president of the Cattlemen’s Association. Gilbert is attending NC State University in the Agriculture Institute Program and Matt is attending Vance-Granville Community College.  The  scholarships are awarded by the Franklin County Cattlemen’s Association.

Farm Bill Organic Initiative offered
Organic farming is one of the fastest growing segments in U.S. Agriculture.  The Food, Conservation and Energy Act of 2008 (2008 Farm Bill) provides specific opportunities for organic producers and those transitioning to organic farming.  North Carolina farmers who are transitioning to organic or who are currently certified organic can now apply to receive assistance under the Organic Initiative through the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP).

The USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) has announced Jan. 15 as the deadline to qualify for the first application period of the 2010 Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) in North Carolina. Landowners who wish to participate in this initial ranking period should have their applications submitted to their local NRCS Field Office by close of business on Jan. 15.

Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program (WHIP) Application Ranking Deadline January 15, 2010
The Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program (WHIP), administered by the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), is a voluntary program for people who want to develop and improve wildlife habitat on private land. Through WHIP, NRCS provides both technical assistance and financial assistance to establish and improve fish and wildlife habitat.  NRCS has announced Jan. 15 as the deadline to qualify for the current WHIP ranking period.

Louisburg utility crews had to shut off power and reroute traffic after a water line ruptured during rush hour on Friday.
The town’s Public Works department got word at about 4 p.m. on Friday that water was running down N.C. 56 east just before Ronald Tharrington Road.
When crews arrived, water was shooting through cracks in the street.
“It was coming out good and hard,” said town Public Utilities Director Ray Patterson.

Emergency personnel take part in mock disaster drill
By 10 a.m., Wednesday, 27 Franklin High School students were in the infirmary, suffering from nausea, diarrhea, vomiting and cramps.
An hour later, 16 more students were infected.
Shortly thereafter, the school’s office and 911 lines are lighting up with reports of illness and parents wanting to know what’s going on.

Deputies arrest vigilantes in bogus rape claim case
ALERT — Franklin County sheriff’s deputies arrested two Warren County men for attempting to shoot up a house.
The family of Steven and Kenneth Hunt said the two men were going to a home on Schloss Road around midnight on Saturday to rescue a woman who claimed she had been sexually assaulted.
Turns out the woman had not been raped and investigators said the two men were wrong for trying to take the law into their own hands.

Times’ cartoonist chosen for year-in-review publication
The Franklin Times’ editorial cartoonist, Jay Lamm, has been published in the “Best Editorial Cartoons of the Year - 2010 Edition.”
The book, published by Pelican, was released last week and features 400 editorial cartoons from 168 cartoonists, three of which are Lamm’s.
The book is part of a series of 38, compiled and edited annually by Charles Brooks, who served as editorial cartoonist for the Birmingham News for almost four decades. Brooks is a former president of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists.

A group of Lake Royale residents began a civic group in search of a cause.
Since it was chartered in June, the Cypress Creek Franklin County Civitan chapter has been busy helping residents at the Lake and are looking beyond the private community for causes and memberships.
“We really want to grow,” said club president-elect Norm Bell. “We are a service organization and we’re looking for new membership.

This year -- especially this year! -- a Christmas Day tradition will continue at The Murphy House Restaurant in Louisburg.
A community Christmas Dinner is being planned for 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Friday, the 34th year the event has been held.
Served will be a traditional Christmas Dinner -- and anyone is welcome -- organizers said.

VGCC BLET Class 88 graduates fifteen
Fifteen cadets graduated Dec. 16 from the Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) course at Vance-Granville Community College in a ceremony held in the Civic Center on Main Campus. After passing the state certification exam, all 15 are authorized to work in any law enforcement agency in North Carolina.

FHS students visit VGCC Culinary program
Students who are learning basic kitchen skills at Franklinton High School learned about how they might continue their education when they visited Vance-Granville Community College’s Culinary Technology program on Dec. 4.
VGCC’s two-year degree program, based at the Masonic Home for Children in Oxford, prepares students for entry-level professional positions in restaurants, hotels, catering operations, health care facilities, schools and other institutions. Chef Ross Ragonese, head of the VGCC Culinary program, told the high school students about what the college offers.

‘Tis almost the night before Christmas -- as every kid in Franklin County will gleefully inform you -- and soon not a creature will be stirring, except, of course, all those perplexed parents trying to fit Bolt B into Hole 37C so that nut 14-11(j) will hold piece G13-8-2 in place while someone finds an 11/32 box-end wrench with a short, preferably bent handle! No wait, it’s got to be a metric wrench!
It’s rather amazing that such a talented guy as Santa can arrange to get all those toys built in his North Pole workshops and deliver them all around the world in a single night regardless of the weather -- but can’t seem to get assembly instructions written so they make sense to native speakers of English!

GOOD MORNING: Approximately 200 aspiring young musicians, members of the 6th-, 7th- and 8th-grade bands at Terrell Lane Middle School, in combination with the 150 member Louisburg High School Band, under the combined direction of Brian D. Miller and Tracie D. Winstead, ushered in the Christmas Holidays with their annual Winter Concert before a packed house at the Louisburg College Auditorium this past Thursday night.
