Franklinton approved its $2.75 million budget on Tuesday, making it the last municipality to adopt a spending plan before the fiscal year begins in July. The budget, which does not include an increase to the 68 cents per $100 valuation tax rate, is what former interim Town Administrator Ed Wyatt called a “maintenance” budget.

County personnel look forward to more effective solid waste operations, but county residents and municipal leaders bemoan the cost. As part of the county’s approved budget, county residents will pay a $45 waste fee that will help the county’s solid waste operations lose reliance on the property tax for funding.
Franklin County schools do not stand alone in the need for more space. According to a Department of Public Instruction preliminary report on statewide facilities needs for the next five years, demand for more classrooms is being fueled by growth and upkeep, with a total estimated cost just under $10 billion.

WRECK. Law enforcement and emergency personnel confirmed one fatality in a two-car accident on N.C. Highway 39 just before Ingleside on Friday afternoon. Louisburg, Epsom and county paramedics and fire units were called about 3:15 p.m. A pickup truck was turned onto its side in the southbound lane and a grey car had spun into a ditch embankment on the southbound side.

LOUISBURG — Louisburg’s Minor League Baseball Tournament was abuzz with talk about the talented Murray’s New and Used Tire Bees of head coach Al Bolton. Those Bees didn’t disappoint as the club put up a strong effort that concluded with a 10-2 decision over the Fred Hight Diamond Jaxx in Wednesday’s Minors championship game of the Louisburg Rec League.
BUNN — A four-day wait proved to be more than worth it for the Eye Care Associates Braves at the Bunn Youth Recreation League’s Major League Baseball Tournament Championship.
During the final game, with the title at stake, the Braves, coming out of the loser’s bracket, were leading the Honeywell Marlins by a 4-2 score in the bottom of the fifth inning.
That’s when torrential rains — which didn’t conclude until seven inches were on the ground — hit the Bunn area.

A Louisburg man who dispensed medicine, made house calls and delivered countless babies in Franklin County died Monday.
Dr. Thomas Wheless was 87.
LOUISBURG - Algie Earl Carter, 82, died Monday morning, June 19, 2006 at his home. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, June 20, in the chapel of Strickland Funeral Home in Louisburg, with the Rev. Reggie Rushing officiating. Burial followed in Lancaster Memorial Park.
KITTRELL - Funeral services for Mr. Motton Watson IV, age 13, who died Wednesday, June 14, 2006, were conducted Monday, June 19, at Bunn Middle School, with the Rev. Melvin Jackson officiating. Burial followed in the M. H. Jones Cemetery.
ZEBULON - Mary Sue Arnold, 59, died Sunday, June 18, 2006 at her residence. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. today (Wednesday, June 21) in the chapel of Bright Funeral Home in Wake Forest. Burial will follow in Pine Forest Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Arnold was a native of Vance County.
