An idea to make pre-meeting prayers actually meaningful

Easily the most awkward portion of any public meeting in Franklin County is the opening when someone is asked to provide the invocation.
Most who are chosen for that task mumble their way through with platitudes and generalities while fully aware that somewhere in the room there usually is an attorney ready to pounce if the prayer goes astray, becomes too denominational or hits certain values too strongly.

When I was younger, brand identity meant almost everything.
I remember people would pick on you if you wore a short-sleeve collared shirt that didn't have a crocodile or polo stick-swinging horse rider on it.
And, God forbid if you wore a pair of sneakers that had four stripes instead of three or the swoosh on your brand-new kicks arched toward the ground instead of the sky.

BUNN -- Name the spot on the field, and Trent Simmons excelled at it this season as a member of the Bunn High School baseball squad.
Simmons, a junior, developed into BHS' mound ace this spring while helping the Wildcats reach the Elite Eight of the Class 2-A State Playoffs.
He also starred in the middle of the batting order and delivered a memorable moonshot against Randleman in the state quarterfinals -- a blast that will be long remembered by BHS diamond fans.

Hayman, who has been at LC for the past 2.5 years, has accepted a position to become the cross country skipper at Division I Mercer University in Macon, Ga.

ZEBULON -- Ryan Aguilar went 2-for-3 with a run and starter Matt Smith pitched through five scoreless innings, but the Carolina Mudcats failed to finish off a series sweep while falling 9-1 to Potomac on Sunday afternoon at Five County Stadium in a Class A Carolina League baseball meeting.
Sunday's series and homestand finale was scoreless through the fifth and tied at 1-1 through the sixth before the Nationals (4-7, 34-44) broke it open while winning 9-1.
