Easily the most awkward portion of any public meeting in Franklin County is the opening when someone is asked to provide the invocation.
Most who are chosen for that task mumble their way through with platitudes and generalities while fully aware that somewhere in the room there usually is an attorney ready to pounce if the prayer goes astray, becomes too denominational or hits certain values too strongly.

When I was younger, brand identity meant almost everything.
I remember people would pick on you if you wore a short-sleeve collared shirt that didn't have a crocodile or polo stick-swinging horse rider on it.
And, God forbid if you wore a pair of sneakers that had four stripes instead of three or the swoosh on your brand-new kicks arched toward the ground instead of the sky.

The Franklin County Democratic Party recently supported an event about voter suppression.
Some at the event claimed that it's voter suppression/disenfranchisement to have to show a valid photo ID when voting.

BUNN -- Name the spot on the field, and Trent Simmons excelled at it this season as a member of the Bunn High School baseball squad.
Simmons, a junior, developed into BHS' mound ace this spring while helping the Wildcats reach the Elite Eight of the Class 2-A State Playoffs.
He also starred in the middle of the batting order and delivered a memorable moonshot against Randleman in the state quarterfinals -- a blast that will be long remembered by BHS diamond fans.

LOUISBURG -- It's been a summer season of change within the athletic department -- and it continued Monday with the surprising resignation of track and field/cross country head coach Josh Hayman.
Hayman, who has been at LC for the past 2.5 years, has accepted a position to become the cross country skipper at Division I Mercer University in Macon, Ga.

LOUISBURG -- Coach Ted Awana and the Louisburg College Hurricanes will kick off their 2019 campaign on Aug. 24 with a home outing versus the USC-Sumter Fire Ants at historic Ronald May Field on the LC campus.

ZEBULON -- Ryan Aguilar went 2-for-3 with a run and starter Matt Smith pitched through five scoreless innings, but the Carolina Mudcats failed to finish off a series sweep while falling 9-1 to Potomac on Sunday afternoon at Five County Stadium in a Class A Carolina League baseball meeting.
Sunday's series and homestand finale was scoreless through the fifth and tied at 1-1 through the sixth before the Nationals (4-7, 34-44) broke it open while winning 9-1.

LOUISBURG--Maston "Matt" White Buttram, 91, died Wednesday, July 3, 2019. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, July 6, at Lancaster Memorial Park, 2210 NC 561 Hwy, Louisburg, with full military honors. The family will receive relatives and friends immediately following the service.

HENDERSON--Memorial services for Magalene "Mag" Davis, 56, who died Sunday, June 30, 2019, will be held Friday, July 5, at 12 p.m. in the Richardson Funeral Home Chapel in Louisburg.

LOUISBURG--Joyce Ann Radford Lunsford, 78, died Saturday, June 29, 2019 at Sunnybrook Rehab. The family will receive friends Saturday from 1 to 1:45 p.m. at Centerville Baptist Church fellowship hall and funeral services will follow at 2 p.m, with the Rev. Doug Moore officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

CREEDMOOR/GRANVILLE COUNTY--Anne Laura Braxton, 91, a lifetime resident of Creedmoor, passed away Saturday, June 29, 2019 at Duke Regional Hospital in Durham, NC.

BUNN - David Charles Horton, 81, of Bunn, died Saturday evening surrounded by his loving family.
