Responding to community complaints, sheriff’s deputies set up a license checkpoint that netted three arrests on drug charges.
Larry C. Alley, 62, Joseph B. Tharrington, 36, and Tara M. Hughes, 27, were charged with conspiring to sell and deliver heroin, possession of heroin, and possession of marijuana.

FRANKLIN COUNTY -- Led by a combined five players and three coaches, Nash County and Franklin County boasted a distinct flair at the annual Powerade North Carolina State High School Level Baseball Games.
The event was held last weekend at several locations in Winston-Salem, including BB&T Park.
The Region 3 Team was coached by Rocky Mount’s Kent Cox. He was assisted by Bunn’s Leonard Allen (a former assistant in Nash County) and Faith Christian School’s Greg Clifton.

After recruiting both locally and internationally, Stokes felt he had his best-ever list of incoming recruits -- complete with scorers, defenders and solid midfielders.

This year proved to be no different.
The LC softballers earned Academic All-American Team status for the 2010-11 school year -- an accomplishment that is destined to be repeated for the 2011-12 campaign.

New SID is tabbed for Canes
Don Stopa won’t be limiting his contributions to Louisburg College to the softball field.
Instead, Stopa’s role at LC was expanded after he was named the school’s Sports Information Director recently.
Stopa will also maintain his duties as Louisburg’s head softball coach. He just completed his first year at the helm of the Lady Hurricanes’ fast-pitch program.

Webb Simpson wins U.S. Open
SAN FRANCISCO -- Raleigh native and Wake Forest University alum Webb Simpson carded a pair of 2-under 68s over the weekend at the US Open at the Olympic Club to secure his first major championship.
Simpson started the weekend in a tie for 29th at 5-over par but stayed steady on Saturday en route to a 68 and jumped into a tie for 8th at 3-over par. He started the final round four-shots behind Jim Furyk.

SALEM, VA -- Seemingly out of the game, down five, the Carolina Mudcats put together a rally for the ages to beat the Salem Red Sox 14-8 on Sunday afternoon at Lewis-Gale Field in a Class A Carolina League baseball game.
The Mudcats scored 10 runs in the eighth, eight of those runs on eight hits with two outs.

County gets unofficial win in water dispute
Unofficially, the county has secured a victory in its long-standing feud with Franklinton over a water contract.
But the matter is far from over.
On Thursday, Wake County Superior Court Judge Paul Gessner notified attorneys that the county should begin drafting orders for summary judgement — a sign that Gessner is siding with the county in its dispute.

401 funding guarantee dies in Senate vote
A legislative attempt to make funding to improve Section C of U.S. 401 in Franklin County more secure went down in flames this week in the North Carolina Senate.
The vote was 30 to 17 against the measure introduced by Franklin County’s Senator, Doug Berger, and came along strict party line votes with Republicans casting all of the “no” votes.

That sentence, uttered by State Rep. Angela Bryant, who soon may represent that part of Franklin County in District 7, set the stage for a town hall session Tuesday night at the Franklin County Courthouse that was co-sponsored by State Sen. No tax hike in Louisburg budget
Assuming no more negative surprises in the county’s on-going property re-valuation mess, Louisburg residents can look forward to a new fiscal year with no tax increases from the town.
That was the bottom line of the budget proposal unveiled Tuesday evening at a council budget workshop.
The budget does include a $1 per month increase in the cost of trash collection but the property tax rate is expected to remain unchanged. No increase is planned in water, sewer or electric rates.
