ATLANTA, Ga. - Lois Brown Wheless died Saturday, December 10, 2011 in Atlanta, GA.  Lois was a resident of Louisburg, N.C for over 60 years until she moved to Atlanta in 2006.  Lois was born in Rocky Mount to Bob and Susie Brown and graduated from West Edgecombe High School as valedictorian.  Lois also graduated from Louisburg College and from Women’s College of the University of North Carolina.

Tony and Lacy Coley of Louisburg are proud to announce the birth of their daughter, Makenna Kay Coley, born Sept. 26, 2011 at Rex Hospital in Raleigh. She weighed 7 pounds, 13 ounces and was 20 1/2 inches long.
Maternal grandparents are Robbie Frazier of Nashville and Horace Pullen of Whitakers.

They were joined at the Middleburg Steak House by their four children and their spouses. Also present were their six grandchildren and their spouses and four great-grandchildren.

BUNN -- Bunn finally picked up its first girls basketball victory of the season last Friday -- and it came at the expense of the Southern Nash Ladybirds.
BHS, which went undefeated during the regular season portion of the 2010-11 campaign, had started with three consecutive losses, albeit against difficult competition -- Northern Nash, East Wake and Nash Central.

LOUISBURG -- After blowing away most of the competition last year, the Louisburg College Hurricanes have become the masters of close victories during the 2011-12 men’s basketball campaign.
Louisburg, under second-year head coach Mark Vanderslice, has dropped just two games and is currently ranked 12th in the latest National Junior College Athletic Association Division II National Poll.

So you think Sandy Koufax had a devastating curveball?
Well, how about the curve the North Carolina High School Athletic Association threw Franklin County’s way during its most recent realignment proposal.
The NCHSAA’s first draft was done by computer and featured Franklinton and Bunn staying on the 2-A level -- and Louisburg dropping down to 1-A -- when the next realignment begins in the Fall of 2013.

DURHAM -- Bunn High School’s boys basketball squad will take part in the Southern Durham High School Spartan Christmas Challenge from Dec. 28-30.
Other entrants are Apex (guided by former Louisburg coach David Neal), Wakefield, Durham Jordan, Riverside, Holly Springs (guided by former Franklinton coach Thurman Jordan), Panther Creek and host Southern Durham.

In the girls game, the Lady Warriors were defeated 39-36 to mark the first decision of the campaign for Northern Vance.

HENDERSON -- The Vance-Granville Community College men’s basketball team continues to search for its first win of the season, but two Vanguards, sophomore Clarence Garner and redshirt freshman Josh Coles, are standing out as leading contributors.
On Nov. 19, VGCC lost at home to area rival Louisburg College by a score of 98-55 at Aycock Recreation Center.

Every year at Christmas, the Franklin County Department of Social Services organizes several programs to support families through the Christmas season.  Programs include individual family sponsorships, toy donations for the annual Christmas party, the traditional Angel Tree, and many more.  The joint efforts of the Franklin County DSS and its community partners bring hope to children, families, and the elderly at this special time of year.

The filing period doesn’t begin until February, but the interest in the newly crafted Senate District representing Franklin County is already high.
Incumbent Doug Berger announced his intentions to seek re-election earlier this year.
And Glen Bradley announced that he would eschew another term in the House and try to win the Senate seat that represents Franklin County and an eastern curve of Wake County.

Gupton honored as outstanding tree farmer
Douglas Gupton of Louisburg was recognized as one of North Carolina’s Tree Farmers of the Year in 2011 during the annual meeting of the North Carolina Tree Farm Program.
Gupton’s farm, which covers some 600 acres in northern Franklin County near the Wood Community, has been enrolled in the American Tree Farm System since the early 1980s.

Attorneys want malpractice suit tossed
Attorneys for a Louisburg doctor accused of malpractice in a Franklinton man’s death want the case tossed.
Raleigh attorneys John Minier and Katherine Fisher filed a motion Dec. 1 on behalf of their client, Dr. David James King, asking a judge to declare a summary judgement in the case based on their arguments that the decedent, Christopher Watson, was responsible for his own death.
