After a series of closed sessions to hammer out who will serve as Franklin County’s next sheriff, the board emerged after half an hour and appointed Jerry Jones to fill the unexpired term of Pat Green.
I’m sure Jones was ecstatic.
Here’s a recent headline about North Carolina’s job market: “Despite Employment Gains, Unemployment Rate Edges Up.” Huh! Was this a misprint? How could the jobless rate increase when there were more jobs? Aren’t unemployment and jobs supposed to go in opposite directions?

He was born in Franklin County on Aug. 8, 1915. I was told that he worked at one of the drug stores in Louisburg.

WENDELL – Shadrick “Shad” Aston Phillips II, died Friday, Sept. 30, 2011 after a long battle with cancer. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, at Strickland Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in the Pitt family cemetery, 193 Pitt Farm Lane, Macclesfield.
FRANKLINTON —Betty B. Witherspoon, 57, died Thursday, Sept. 22, 2011 at Duke Raleigh Hospital in Raleigh. Funeral services were held Saturday, Oct. 1, at Westminister Evangelistic Church #2, Louisburg, with Evangelist Debra Wright officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Jalyn Grace Reynolds, born April 9, 2011 to Robin and Jason Reynolds, died Monday, Aug. 15, 2011. A memorial service was held Thursday, Sept. 29, in the Falls Community Cemetery.
HENDERSON - Funeral services for Lillia Southerland, 83, who died Friday, Sept. 30, 2011, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, at Rowland Chapel Christian Church, with the Rev. Isaac Thomas officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
KITTRELL - Funeral services for Euralee Allen Brooks, 85, who died Saturday, Oct. 1, 2011, will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, at South Main Street Baptist Church, with the Rev. David Rosby officiating. Burial will follow in the Manasseh Church cemetery.
LOUISBURG – Joshua J. Allen, 38, died Oct. 4. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Strickland Funeral Home & Crematory, Louisburg.
SPRING HOPE – Johnnie Cole Wilder, 67, of Spring Hope, passed away Monday night at his home surrounded by his family.
RALEIGH - Frances Carolyn Eubanks Foster, 80, of Raleigh, passed away Sunday night, October 2, 2011 at her residence, after a lengthy illness.
CASTALIA - Fannie Coggin Arrington, 83, of Castalia, died Saturday, October 1, 2011, at Nash General Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Perry J. Faulkner, Sr., and Aubra Arrington; her son, Phil Faulkner; two brothers, Alex Coggin and Cleg Coggin; two sisters, Louise Debelius and Lillie Porter.
RALEIGH - Bob Reynolds Pearce, 80, passed away peacefully at Rex Healthcare on October 2, 2011 with his loving family by his side. He was born September 4, 1931 in Franklin Co. to the late Urban Turner Pearce and Pauline House Pearce. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by an infant daughter, Debra Jean Pearce, and three brothers; Urban Lynn, Charles and Joe Pearce.
Franklinton made two DWI arrests beginning last Friday.
In the first incident, according to a report by Sgt. W.B. Bulloch, he was made aware of a situation at the Wilco Hess gas station.
Vance-Granville Community College Board of Trustees Chairman Donald C. Seifert Sr. has announced that the Board’s Presidential Search Committee has narrowed the pool of presidential candidates from 42 down to six.
In July, the Board began a nationwide search for VGCC’s next president, after Dr. Randy Parker announced that he would be leaving on Sept. 1 to become the president of Guilford Technical Community College.

Last Friday’s Northern Carolina Conference matchup between Louisburg and host Corinth Holders was delayed over one hour because of storms.

LOUISBURG -- Playing Ravenscroft with one week of preparation time is difficult enough, let alone with no time at all.
Ravenscroft’s diversified, multi-faceted attack can certainly be tough on opposing defenses -- a fact that Louisburg found out Monday night at historic Patterson Field on the LHS campus.
The task of playing difficult back-to-back games -- one of which involved a 10-hour road trip -- proved to be too tall of an order for the Louisburg College football squad.
Nationally ranked LC headed into last Saturday’s key Northeast Conference matchup at Dean College with an unblemished record, but Dean was able to come away with a 20-10 decision in a game that was played in Franklin, Mass. -- just a stone’s throw away from Gillette Stadium and the home of the New England Patriots.

WARRENTON -- Bunn spotted Warren County the game’s first touchdown, but the Wildcats quickly roared back en route to posting a 51-18 road victory over the Eagles in a Northern Carolina Conference football showdown last Friday.
Bunn will carry a 4-2 overall and 3-0 league record into Friday’s key matchup at backyard rival Franklinton.
AURELIAN SPRINGS -- Franklinton went down to the wire to avert an upset bid last Friday at Northern Carolina Conference football rival Northwest Halifax.
The undefeated Red Rams scored on a 4-yard touchdown run from T.J. Wall with 48 seconds remaining to squeeze out a 20-16 decision over the Vikings.
DANVILLE, VA. -- Wideout Jarret Coffield hauled in a career-high nine receptions for 119 yards, and fellow senior Javon Boddie returned an interception 23 yards for a touchdown to lead North Carolina Wesleyan College’s football team to a 29-0 shutout of homestanding Averett University last Saturday.
