My Spanish class was once again invited to taste Louisburg College Professor Jennith Thomas’ cuisine from the new world. On Feb. 15, the class had a special celebration by sampling the foods of North America and Latin America.
Ms. Thomas’ geography class of this spring semester took the initiative of studying the physical and cultural geography of these regions. The students acquire mapmaking and interpretation skills by doing projects in the area of cultural geography.

BUNN -- Bunn has been up-and-down during the non-league portion of its 2011 fast-pitch softball schedule -- but the Ladycats were revving on all cylinders during their Northern Carolina Conference opener last Friday night against the host Franklinton Lady Rams.
Bunn scored a single run in the top of the first and then broke things open later in the game en route to an 11-1 conquest over the Lady Rams at the Franklinton Recreation Park.

LOUISBURG -- After falling far behind in the Region X standings, the Louisburg College Hurricanes had shovels in tow for Sunday’s doubleheader climax for a four-game home league baseball series against the Florence-Darlington Tech Stingers.
Last Saturday, Louisburg had opened the series with a twinbill loss against the Stingers. On the heels of an earlier sweep at the hands of Pitt Community College, that put Louisburg on the bottom of the league standings with a disappointing 0-6 start to region competition.

FRANKLINTON -- Franklinton’s undefeated start to the 2011 girls soccer season continued Friday at home against the Wake Forest-Rolesville Lady Cougars.
Nichole Poppe scored the hat trick and Nikki Bell added another marker as the Lady Rams strolled to a convincing 4-0 decision over the Class 4-A Lady Cougars at the FHS Football Field.

GREENVILLE -- The East Carolina University Athletics office has announced that Saturday, March 26 has been designated as Little League Day at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium.
All youth who take part in Little League baseball are invited to attend a free clinic by Head Baseball Coach Billy Godwin and current members of the Pirates baseball team beginning at 10:30 a.m. at Clark-LeClair Stadium.

The Pirates recently won the Youngsville Parks and Recreation Department’s 6-8 Boys Basketball Tournament. The club, coached by Phillip Brown, defeated the Tar Heels 14-10 in the finals. The Pirates finished regular season action tied for first place and then won a pair of tourney games to close the campaign with a 9-1 worksheet.

Family files suit against animal control over euthanized dog
A family whose pet was killed in violation of several shelter policies, animal advocates admit, filed a lawsuit against animal control and its director on Monday.
The lawsuit was filed two days before the animal advisory board was set to meet (Wednesday) to further discuss the matter.

Green restores $6,040 in missing fund-raising money
A restitution check totaling $6,040 is on its way to Franklin County coffers in the wake of the controversy surrounding former Sheriff Pat Green.
Green’s attorney, Johnny Williamson of Louisburg, issued the check this week from the trust account of his firm, Jolly, Williamson & Williamson and sent it to Louisburg attorney Boyd Sturges in his capacity as attorney for the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.

County won’t release list of sheriff candidates
County staff confirmed they have received more than a dozen letters from folks seeking the sheriff’s post.
The county manager, though, has declined to release the names.
Based on those who have recently run for the office or publicly expressed interest, The Franklin Times, had compiiled a list of nine people who confirmed their interest in the post.
