GOOD MORNING: Wow! That was some boomer we got early Thursday night — thunder, lightning, wind and rain, according to what I’m told. Actually, I don’t know anything about it. I was physically worn out and went to bed about the time my little weather radio sounded off with that severe thunderstorm warning for our area and before the storm struck I was sound asleep, and I mean SOUND asleep. I didn’t hear a thing, period. And, by-the-way, don’t pack your long-johns away just yet, I understand we’re in for a drastic cool-down, comparatively speaking, come Sunday.

Mobley honored with award for service
Franklin County Cooperative Extension Agent Martha Mobley was honored for her service.
The state’s Cooperative Extension Service Foundation selected Extension Agent Martha Mobley as its 2009 Search for Excellence award winner.
According to a release, the foundation’s board of directors were impressed with the quality of Mobley’s programs.

VGCC Franklin Campus instructors hit the roadways for a good cause
Two members of the faculty at Vance-Granville Community College’s Franklin County Campus recently participated in the local Tour de Grace.  Sue Guerrant, who teaches Office Administration and Information Systems courses, and Kendra Faulkner, a Computer Information Technology instructor, rode in the 29-mile charity bicycle race that toured through scenic Franklin County on April 24.

Andrew Willis and friends will present an unusual focus on piano literature for the last of the three spring concert performances at Cherry Hill in Warren County.

However, defense and inconsistent hitting were question marks for LC coming into the event, though head coach John Thomas had seen improvement in those areas over the past few weeks.

Wildcats reach the playoffs
BUNN -- Bunn’s Wildcats clinched the No. 4 position in the Northern Carolina Conference baseball standings with a 15-7 home victory against county rival Franklinton on Tuesday night.
With the win, Bunn also secured a spot in the upcoming Class 2-A State Playoffs, which will begin this coming week. The Wildcats will be on the road Friday against an opponent to be determined.

BUNN -- Even though they had already wrapped up third place in the Northern Carolina Conference standings, the Bunn Ladycats had plenty to play for Wednesday when they hosted North Johnston for BHS’ regular season finale.
With pride on the line, and two seniors competing at home for the last time, the Ladycats erased a first-half deficit and went on to edge the Lady Panthers by a 3-2 score in an NCC girls soccer showdown.

FHS girls are named All-Stars
Franklinton High School standouts Amanda Knapp and Shaylyn Poppe will make history for Franklin County this summer at the North Carolina Coaches Association East-West All-Star Girls Soccer Game.
Poppe and Knapp will become the first-ever girls soccer participants from the county for the annual event, which is scheduled for July 20 at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro Soccer Stadium.

Torch Run golf slated
FRANKLIN COUNTY -- The annual North Carolina Law Enforcement Torch Run Benefit for Special Olympics Golf Tournament is scheduled for June 4 at The River Golf Course at Lake Royale.
A four-person superball format will be utilized. Cost is $60 for individual or $50 for Sworn LEO participants, which includes golf, dinner, awards and door prizes.

Mudcats’ game is suspended
ZEBULON -- Thursday night’s game between the Carolina Mudcats and Chattanooga Lookouts was suspended after 10 complete innings due to heavy rains, pea-sized hail and strong winds at Five County Stadium.
The Class AA Southern League game resumed in the top of the 11th on Friday, with the regularly scheduled nine-inning game being played thereafter.

Relay for Life
Relay for Life
Franklin County’s Relay for Life celebrated its 15th year with a two-day event held last Friday and Saturday at Bunn High School. The event, aimed at raising money to fund research to wipe out cancer, featured 56 teams, all walking laps to raise money and awareness about the disease that can be deadly. Even in a struggling economy, organizers said, Franklin County residents, businesses and civic organizations dug deep to give as much as they could, raising more than $144,000 toward cancer research.

Traffic stop brings drug arrest
Police arrested a Louisburg man during a traffic stop accused of drug possession.
According to a report, Officer Travis Lincoln was patrolling at N. Main Street and W. Noble Street at about 10:30 p.m. on Saturday when he stopped a car because its headlights were out.
As he was making the stop, Lincoln said he saw a plastic bag fly from the passenger side window.

Homeowner kills intruder
A homeowner shot and killed an intruder early Monday in what Sheriff Pat Green said was an act of self-defense.
Law enforcement officers have not filed any charges against Terry McClamb, 38, who investigators said shot and killed Thomas J. Wright just before 7 a.m. on Monday.
Wright was already facing charges of breaking into the Green Hill Road home of McClamb and his sister, Lisa Jane Wright.

War of words: Louisburg vs. Novant
Strong feelings linger in the wake of a decision to keep Franklin Regional Medical Center in Louisburg -- and Franklin County a one-hospital county -- as evidenced by dueling statements from the two parties involved in the dispute.
Novant Health, which now owns Franklin Regional, announced late last week that it is giving up, at least temporarily, on the idea of building a new, second hospital near Youngsville.
