County squads start playoffs
FRANKLIN COUNTY -- Five Franklin County teams qualified for the Class 2-A State Basketball Playoffs, but only two were remaining following Monday’s opening night of postseason competition.
Both Bunn’s boys and girls, playing at home as part of a doubleheader, were able to come away with victories.
BHS’ girls defeated Cedar Ridge (see story on page 10), while the boys claimed a 60-53 decision against Durham School of the Arts.

GREENVILLE -- Second-ranked Virginia (2-1) held off a late rally by No. 11 East Carolina University (1-2) Sunday afternoon and took the rubber-match of the three game series 14-11 at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium.
Heading into the bottom of the eighth, the Cavaliers held a commanding 13-4 lead before the Pirates came roaring back by putting a seven spot on the board in front of 4,774 fans cutting the lead to two, 13-11.

Wake Electric seeking applicants for scholarship and Washington trip
Wake Electric is seeking applicants for a $1,000 scholarship plus a one-week all expenses paid trip to Washington D.C. for the 2010 Rural Electric Youth Tour.
The trip will be from June 11 – June 18.
Students chosen to attend the Youth Tour will join 1,500 high school students from across the U.S. to learn about U.S. government, American history, and electric cooperatives.

TIGER escapes Franklin County
Franklin County’s attempt to fund improvements to U.S. 401 from Wake County to Louisburg with federal Transportation Improvement Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) funds has failed.
Franklin County received none of the $66 million it was requesting in TIGER funds -- and the state Department of Transportation was granted only $10 million of the $300 million it was seeking for improvements to the Yadkin River Bridge on Interstate 85.

Bunn man arrested after Franklinton shootout
Franklinton police arrested a Bunn man this week charged with going armed to the terror of the public.
The arrest and messy investigation, police said, highlights growing concerns for law enforcement — rising gang and drug activity, and communities that are held in terror by criminals.
Following what appeared to be a shootout on Monday night, police arrested Brandon Alexander Teasley, 19, of Dead Road and charged him with going armed to the terror of the public and discharging a firearm in city limits.

Franklin County’s health department ranks just outside the top third in the state, according to a national study released this week.
The University of Wisconsin and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation combined to rank each county in each state based on broad measures of health risk behaviors, outcomes, and associated health determinants.

Franklinton will spend $11,000 to shore up dam
FRANKLINTON — Town officials agreed on Tuesday to spend more than $11,000 to make emergent repairs to the dam.
More serious and expensive steps were discussed during a two-day commission retreat on Wednesday and Thursday.
The town’s dam dates back to the 1960s and, recently, has begun to show its age as heavy rain events caused erosion and highlighted the need for repairs.

No injuries were reported in this three-vehicle wreck that shut down a section of Bunn Road Thursday afternoon. The driver of the big rig, foreground, was making a wide right turn, causing the driver behind him, Latitia Bowden, to slow down in her Nissan, the middle car. However, April Cooke, the driver of a Honda, the car to the far left, failed to slow, rear-ending Bowden and nearly sending the car into the truck’s trailer. Cooke swerved her vehicle into a bush on the side of the road.

EARLY MORNING EXERCISE
Students at Franklinton Elementary school have the opportunity each morning to walk in the gym to music along with the PE teacher, Israel Johnson and parent volunteers. The number of students has grown from about 30 students to over 125 walking each day. Students  walked over 2,000 laps. Students are encouraged to bring in healthy snacks and to become physically fit by taking part in walking, jumping rope, or dancing.

Roundtable shows promise for citizens
“Listening is far better than talking . . . . And listening is not enough.”
With those words, Lt. Gov. Walter Dalton kicked off a business roundtable session Tuesday in Louisburg.

And they played in beautifully manicured stadiums with officials who monitored the rules and made sure everyone played by them — more or less!
